I just learned of this website from my Uncle. My grandfather is General Robert C. Forbes. He passed away on March 18th. I know he attended many of the reunions for the 199th. He was a great man and I will miss him so much as I know you all will to. I am glad he had friends like you all

HEY EVERYONE,

YOGI (YEOSTROS) AND I CAME UP WITH AN IDEA FOR SHOWING THE REDCATCHER WAY OF EXPRESSING OUR CARING FOR ANOTHER REDCATCHER BROTHER GOING THROUGH SOME VERY CRITICAL TIMES IN HOUSTON AT THE MDA CANCER CENTER. AS YOU KNOW, I MET ALAN HEMBERGER OF C/5/12 WHILE I WAS THERE IN FEBRUARY FOR CONSULTATION. SINCE ALAN IS A NEWSCASTER FOR WB39 THERE IN HOUSTON, WHY NOT ASK FOR A SPOT ON HIS AIRTIME? HUMBLY I ASK ALAN WHAT THE CHANCES OF PULLING OFF THE TRIBUTE WERE. THE FOLLOWING IS THE EMAILS WE EXCHANGED. AS YOU WILL SEE, THERE IS NOTHING ''SET IN STONE'' AT THIS TIME BUT THE WHEELS ARE TURNING. ANY IDEAS FROM ANY OF YOU WOULD BE APPRECIATED SHOULD WE BE ABLE TO PULL THIS OFF, AND RIGHT NOW IT'S LOOKING GOOD. I STILL HAVE TO HEAR TERESA RIEHL'S TAKE ON THE MATTER AND WE WILL GO FROM THERE. THIS IS YET ANOTHER GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW OUR UNIT PULLS TOGETHER FOR EACH OTHER.

LOVE TO ALL,
RICK JONES

TERESA,

YESTERDAY YOGI AND I WERE THINKING OF SOMETHING WE COULD DO FOR STEVE TO SHOW SOME CARE AND OUR SUPPORT. I CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF GETTING ALAN HEMBERGER TO DO A SPOT FOR STEVE ON HIS NEWS CAST FROM ALL THE REDCATCHERS. BELOW IS MY EMAIL AND ALAN'S ANSWER. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND IF YOU CAN GET ANY OLD NAM PICS TO BE USED WHEN IT AIRS. THAT'S ASSUMING YOU THINK IT WOULD BE OKAY.

RESPECTFULLY,
RICK JONES

ALAN,

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE MET STEVE RIEHL YET BUT I KNOW HE'S SURELY LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU. A FEW OF US HAD A THOUGHT??? DO YOU THINK YOU COULD DO A SHORT SPOT DURING ONE OF YOUR REPORTS ABOUT STEVE AND HOW ALL OF THE 199TH IS PULLING FOR HIM DURING HIS ORDEAL? IT WOULD BE THE BEST THING ANYONE COULD DO THAT HE WOULD NEVER FORGET. HE DESERVES THE RECOGNITION AND SO DO YOU. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

HI RICK..,
WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!!I WONDER IF WE CAN GET SOME PHOTOGRAPHS TOGETHER TOO. TV REALLY NEEDS PICTURES...AND OLD NAM PICS WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO TELL THE STORY OF BOTH OF YOU GUYS. THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT...MAYBE WE SHOULD DO IT WHEN WE CAN ALL GET TOGETHER IN HOUSTON...DIDN'T YOU SAY THAT BOTH YOU AND STEVE HAVE TO COME BACK FOR SOME FOLLOWUP TREATMENT? MAYBE WE COULD FIND SOME OTHER 199TH GUYS TOO THAT MIGHT BE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. LET ME KNOW...

I TALKED TO STEVE'S WIFE LAST NIGHT AND WILL PAY HIM A VISIT LATER THIS WEEK..PROBABLY THURSDAY OR FRIDAY AFTER HE'S HAD A DAY OR TWO TO RECOVER A LITTLE FROM HIS ORDEAL.AND SEE IF HE'S UP TO FACING TV CAMERAS.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE E-MAILS...I REALLY APPRECIATE HEARING ABOUT YOU GUYS...GOT A CALL TWO WEEKS AGO FROM RODNEY LEWIS FROM TENNESSEE...I THOUGHT AT FIRST IT WAS A LOCAL CRANK CALL....WE GET THEM NOW AND AGAIN IN THE TV BUSINESS...TOOK ME A MINUTE OR TWO TO FIGURE OUT WHO HE WAS...BUT WE HAD A NICE TALK AFTER THAT. HE'S A GOOD GUY AND MAYBE I'LL GET A CHANCE TO MEET HIM AT A MINI REUNION OR SOMETHING.
THANKS AGAIN FOR THE E-MAILS..SAY HI TO KIM FOR ME....ALL THE BEST TO YOU BRO....SEE YOU SOON....ALAN ( HEMI C/5/12 )

I am posting this message to update and thank you all for your many thoughts and prayers during a stressful time. My husband, Steve Riehl underwent surgery on Monday the 18th of March for Mesothelioma. He is still in ICU but doing very well. The MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is GREAT! We expect him to be moved to a regular room in the next day or two. It was very important to him that I post this message, to let you all know he is doing well and to express his thanks (and mine) for all your thoughts and prayers. So hopefully I managed to press the right keys, if I placed it in the wrong page I apologize! May God bless you and keep you in his care always.

Our thoughts and prayers are with General Forbes and his family as he lies in his death bed. I feel very honored that during the last two DC reunions I was able to spend considerable time with him and I really cherish those memories. After seeing the movie "We Were SOldiers Once" Friday I am especially happy that I served in the 199th and had General Forbes as one our commanders. Please think of him and his family at this difficult time and pray that his passing be painless and peaceful.

My father was also my commanding officer for the first some 20 years of my life. Today he lies in a bed in his study, surrounded by memobrilla of his Army career, his family and his life. He is dying and his family - my 2 brothers and sister, his devoted wife of nearly 60 years and his sister of 83 years are all here and we have told him goodbye and expressed our love and thanks to him. We all ask you, on his behalf, for your prayers that his passing is swift, his pain is minimal and his aim for heaven is true.

thanks to yogi and rick for their kind words and support. It's easier to be positive when you have good doctors and a good support group and obviously I am getting more support than I expected. It's also easier to be positive when we can lean on our past experiences and realize someone else always has it worse than I do. God williing, in time I will beat this. My dad died from the same pleural mesothelioma that I have. It is not heriditary buy asbestos caused , I owe my chances of survival to him because I found it early due to consant checkups.I wish he was here to thank, thanks in advance for your prayers and support

HEY GUYS,

I TALKED TO STEVE RIEHL FROM C/4/12 TODAY. HE IS AT MD ANDERSON HOSPITAL IN HOUSTON. HE'S HAVING A LUNG REMOVED BECAUSE OF CANCER. HE WILL BE BACK IN JUNE FOR RADIATION THERAPY SO WE MAY GET TO MEET SINCE I'LL BE THERE IN MID TO LATE JUNE. IT'S REALLY A JOY FOR ME TO MEET OTHER REDCATCHERS. WE ARE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT BREED THAN MOST VIETNAM VETS.

THURSDAY ROBERT FROMME AND JAMES HELTON OF D/4/12 CAME FOR A VISIT. ROBERT CAME FROM SAN ANTONIO AND JAMES CAME FROM DALLAS. CHARLIE ENGEL OF 2/40TH ARTY WAS ALSO HERE FROM HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS. WE HAD A BLAST TALKING ABOUT OLD TIMES AND DRINKING COLD BEER. JAMES FARMER OF D/4/12 WAS TO BE HERE BUT COULDN'T MAKE IT TILL FRIDAY AM BUT SINCE ROBERT AND JAMES LEFT FOR HOME THURSDAY NIGHT HE DECIDED TO WAIT UNTIL HE COULD SPEND MORE TIME. HE WAS HERE FOR AN AFTERNOON BACK IN THE SUMMER OF LAST YEAR.

WE ALL NEED TO MAKE MORE EFFORT IN GETTING BACK IN CONTACT WITH THOSE WE SERVED WITH SO LONG AGO. I'M A LITTLE OVER HALFWAY THRU ''WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE...AND YOUNG.'' IT'S AWESOME WHAT THOSE POOR GI'S WENT THROUGH WITH SUCH COURAGE AND HONOR. I THOUGHT I HAD IT BAD. HUH! SHIT GOT HEAVY BUT NEVER TO SUCH EXTREMES AS ACTUAL COMPANY OR PLATOON-SIZE HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMED IT TO ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE.

LETS ALL SAY A FEW PRAYERS FOR STEVE THAT ALL GOES WELL FOR HIM AND HE WILL BE BACK TO NORMAL SOON. YOU HAVE TO ADMIRE A MAN THAT WENT TO VIETNAM AS AN E-6, SPENT ONLY 2 YEARS IN THE ARMY AND HAD 13 MONTHS AT THE E-6 GRADE. IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO GIVE HIM A CALL BEFORE HIS SURGERY ON MONDAY MORNING HE CAN BE REACHED AT 713-790-1600, EXT 320 AT THE MDA HOTEL/MOTEL THERE AT THE MAIN COMPLEX. HE SOUNDED GREAT DURING OUR CONVERSATION. HE WAS SO POSITIVE IN HIS WORDS THAT I KNOW ALL WILL GO FINE FOR HIM. HE IS NOT A QUITTER.

MY BEST TO ALL,
RICK JONES

Today the health Clinic that I work at was dedicated to Charles Thomas Moore, medic that served with 1st Cav in 1969-70.
The Moore Health Clinic is the largest medical clinic in the Army.
As the dedication speeches were given, tears began to roll down my face as we were asked to amagine ourself the Tommy
place under fire, with sounds of artillery and mortar coming into the area and the streams of the wounded........
Immediate flashback to the fields of Viet Nam came to my mine. Only the smell of the smoke, burning of flesh and blood
were left out of the General's speech.
Many of the wounded men that Tommy help to save in short tour of duty were also in attendance and grateful for his
care of them in their time of need. Tommy was not as lucky to make it back to the states, but his memorial will live on.
As a medic, I am thankful to hear from the men that have been treated in the past.
Thank you for the protection that you gave me in my youth.
Howard

2nd of the 3rd,----Alpha----1st Platoon----April, 1969----June, 1970
On the coming solemn occasion of St. Patrick's Day, Sunday, March 17, and in case I don't have another opportunity before then, I thought I'd remind you of some Irish Wisdom with which you are undoubtedly all vaguely familiar by individual experience but may need to see again in writing.

Murphy's Laws were handed down through the ages in the Murphy family since time immemorial, but first vigorously tested by application of the scientific method by the famous Irish Physicist, James Murphy, at the time that Sir Isaac Newton was exploring the general laws of Force, such as, "For every action, there is an opposite, and equal, reaction."

Now, Mr. Newton was a fine man and a brilliant mind, but for all of God's blessings he failed to note that where life is concerned, no one much cares that physics is running like a well oiled machine if it happens that one's luck is off.

Michael O'Toole, an assistant for Murphy, and often therefore a victim of Murphy's research, has a small footnote in history as he proposed, and successfully argued to James Murphy and the scientific community, a corollary to Murphy's General Laws.

Murphy's Laws

Nothing is as easy as it looks, everything takes longer than you expect, and if anything can wrong - it will, at the worse possible moment.

Left to themselves, things will always go from bad to worse.

If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will go wrong is the one that will do the most damage.

Whenever everything is apparently going well it is only because something has been overlooked which will inevitably go wrong (see laws 1, 2, and 3).

O'Toole's Corollary

Murphy was an optimist.

Erin go bragh everyone.

John McBride, aka, Sean Mac Giolla Brighde

Hi Captain Balderson. It is great hearing from you. I hope you stop by and really check this site out. There are a lot of Redcatchers in here. We had some good laughs together, and some tough times that you had to lead us through. I always felt it was a privledge to be one of you rto's. I'll always remember when we had to pop smoke for the bombers. It was just you and I in real thick jungle. You asked me if I was scared an I said " Hell Ya ". You were just taking your 45 cal. and my M-16. Not to mention we had just gotten out of a serious firefight. After we poped smoke we were running back to the primiter and you were talking on my radio. As we were running there was a tree in front of us. You went left and I went right. Once the hand set tore off my radio I broke the three minute mile. When you got back you asked me where I had gone. It was scary then, but a good laugh today. Welcome home.

Robert Balderson! I was and am pleased to have finally tracked you down! Welcome to the 199th guestbook and thanks for coming to visit. Vietnam may have been 'a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away' but as the RTO who carried your radio and lived with you on dikes, in paddy mud, in bunkers, on jungle trails, behind whatever cover we could find, etc., I shared to many emotional moments of my life with you to not have wanted to find out where you went, what became of you, and who you are now. Best wishes and high regards. I look forward to talking with you again. Regardless of whether anyone else has ever said it to you, sincerely, welcome home.

AS MANY OF YOU HAVE READ IN EARLIER POSTINGS I APPLIED TO M. D. ANDERSON CANCER CENTER IN HOUSTON AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER AT THE VETERANS HOSPITAL IN DALLAS. ALAN HEMBERGER, FORMERLY A MEMBER OF C/5/12 IN VIETNAM, EMAILED ME AND SAID HE LIVED THERE, WORKED FOR A LOCAL TELEVISION STATION AS A NEWS ANCHORMAN AND THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO MEET ME WHILE I WAS IN TOWN. WHEN ASK IF THERE WAS ANYTHING HE COULD DO FOR ME I TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD APPRECIATE HIS WRITING OF OUR ENCOUNTER. MY PLANS WERE TO ADD ANOTHER PAGE TO MY WEB SITE TELLING OF MY EXPERIENCE IN HOUSTON AND HIS VIEWS WOULD BE A PART OF THAT PAGE. YESTERDAY I RECIEVED AN EMAIL FROM HIM AND HIS COMMENTS ARE TO FOLLOW. HIS PLACE ON THE WEB IS AT: http://www.khwb39.com/news/bio_alanhemberger.html HIS WORDS ARE VERY SPECIAL TO ME AND I HOPE THAT THEY WILL BE TO ALL OF YOU AS WELL. THE DATE WAS FEBRUARY 19, 2002.
***********************************************************

"A BRIEF REDCATCHER UNION.....HOUSTON 2002"
My name is Alan Hemberger. I served with Charlie company 5/12 199th L I B... from March of
'69 till May of '70. Like many of you, I have stayed in touch with about a half dozen members of
my old platoon...we've had some small reunions over the years..but otherwise I never meet
anyone in civilian life from the old 199th. In recent years I have found the Redcatcher page on
the internet and check it out several times a week. Sometime ago I noticed a post about a 4/12
vet, Rick Jones, who was coming to Houston for some cancer tests. I decided to e-mail him and
let him know he had a friend in Houston whether he knew it or not...whether he wanted it or not.
Rick promptly answered and said he'd be glad to meet a fellow Redcatcher anytime.

Understand, I had never met Rick before...didn't know what I would find on the other side of the
motel room door...What I found was an open door...and a giant of a friend who greeted me with a
long lost bear hug. He introduced me to his wife and mom like he had known me for thirty years!
There was no uneasiness..nothing unfamiliar about Rick. I knew him...he is a combat vet. He is a
fellow member of a most exclusive club, he is my friend, a friend who is facing a cancer
diagnosis..Rick said..."in Vietnam we could see and touch our enemy..but this thing inside me..."
He was fighting it with faith and courage and with the faith and courage and loyalty of his wife,
his mom, and his friends. Like in Vietnam, the more support you had the better your chances of a
healthy outcome...survival.

Many of our fellow Redcatchers need our support now. They need us as friends and members of
that exclusive club to supoort them now more than ever!!! We may all have that Agent Orange
time bomb ticking in us. There may come a time when have to make that e-mail post on the
Redcatcher page about a friend facing cancer. Just like getting mail in Vietnam...remember how
good that made you feel?...some of our friends need us again..maybe just an e-mail of support.

Rick got some good news this time. We can all celebrate another victory along side our combat
brother.

The following obituary for Howard K. Smith is somewhat irrelevant to the 199th and therefore to this site. But some may remember that Howard K. Smith's son was seriously wounded and nearly killed during the battle in the Ia Drang in 1965 which led to the novel, "We Were Soldiers Once, And Young". My condolences to his son.

"Broadcast legend Howard K. Smith known for his intelligence and integrity died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. Mr. Smith, the newscaster who gained prominence during World War II as one of "Murrow's Boys" on CBS radio and ended his career as an ABC co-anchor and analyst four decades later, is dead at age 87. John F. McBride <john.mcbride@homestreetbank.com> from Seattle, Washington
2nd of the 3rd,----Alpha----1st Platoon----April, 1969----June, 1970
Today is my 53rd birthday, thanks largely to the rest of you, primarily those men I served with in Alpha while I was in the field from April until December, 1969. Thanks very much, guys. I turned 21 at Blackhorse in 1970. At 22 years of age Joe Lazicki was the oldest of my friends to die then.

For Joe and those other long dead friends this A.E. Housman poem:

To an Athlete Dying Young

THE time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

Thanks for your friendship, Joe.

Best wishes all.
John

----Echo/Charlie----Recon and CO Headquarters----Jun 1966----Nov 1967

My previous claim of having the most complete list of Vietnam casualties of Old Guardsmen found on the Internet is retracted. However, and thanks to Larry McDougal, I can now fully restate my claim. Larry graciously sent me the names, including their assigned companies, of 193 Old Guardsmen that lost their life in Vietnam. In memory of them, their names are now posted on the Roll of Honor Page found on the above Web Site.

Again, thanks Larry for your contribution.

I originally was stationed with the ASA for 2 former tours and reassigned to the 199th. I spent only a short time in the field and wasthere when General Bond was killed along with a private named McCord. I still remember the first time I got to see what Vietnam was really about and don't regret the time I spent there. I just hope that we can all remember good times as well as bad. I got out of the service as a SSG with almost 7 years of service and could not make myself to become a career soldier after that.

Some of you who served with us in Delta 4/12 in 69 and 70 may want to call or write these fellows. Glen Dale “Robby” Robinson lives in Magee Mississippi. Rodney E. Lewis lives in Maryville, Tennessee. Drop me an email at rfromme@stic.net if you would like to contact them via snail-mail or phone and I will pass that information on to you.

On another note, the article about Delta 4/12 and the firefight when SSGT Andujar was KIA will be published in the June issue of VietNam Magazine. I want to thank all of you who helped with letters and photos for the SSGTs family. I also appreciate those of you who helped work through the memories. I should mention that Rodney Lewis was one of the soldiers with Andujar when he was hit.

Take care , Brothers! I am proud to have served with you.

I seek the names, information about, and/or contact with two individuals who served in the 3/7 sometime between September, 1969, and June, 1970. The first was an enlisted man who had been a seminarian (I believe from upstate New York) prior to being drafted, and who was shot in the foot at Firebase Mace. He had light duty at Mace while his foot wound healed, then returned to jungle duty. The second was a lieutenant (I believe from Baltimore) who developed malaria sometime in the winter/spring of 1970, was hospitalized for treatment, then sent to Cam Ranh Bay in about May of 1970, for continued treatment and recovery.

The list of over 180 men are presented in a manual scroller and sorted by the Honoree’s date of death. If known, the company of each man at the time of their death is also shown. Those that wish can view and post a comment on the listed Honorees.

(I hope those dates above are right- it's hard to remembers.) I was one of the original five members of the brigade. On the day the rest of our Fort Benning Infantry Officers Basic Class got their first set of unit orders, four of us were left on the parade ground at the end of the ceremony. We were told to report the following morning to the office of Col. George Rehkof over at the infantry school. When we arrived, he told us "Gentlemen, we are the 199th Light Infantry Brigade". As I First Lieutenant it was hard filling a major's position right off the bat! but as I look back on my six years in the service, this period was the most fulfilling.

Merry Christmas to all Redcatcher veterans and their families, especially my friends in A-5-12. I remember Christmas 1968 patrolling from FSB Stephanie, we stayed so busy, we didn't have time to be lonely or homesick. We ambushed on Christmas Eve with orders to only fire if fired on (truce) and patrolled all morning of Christmas Day. Around noon, we stopped in the firebase for a special Christmas meal. Can't really remember what we did for the remainder of the day...but I'm sure it wasn't fun. Best wishes to all of you, hope to see many of you at the reunion in DC.

Thanks everyone. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and best wishes to all for all the best of life in 2002.

FELLOW REDCATCHERS, THE FOLLOWING IS MY REPLY TO A REDCATCHER WHO WAS WITH F TROOP/51ST LURPS IN 67-68. I THOUGHT I MIGHT SHARE THIS WITH YOU ALL BECAUSE WITH SOME OF OUR HELP WE CAN DO A LOT FOR HIS EFFORTS IN DOING RECONDO FOR OUR UNIT WAY BACK WHEN. SEE WHAT YOU THINK:

DON AND ANNETTE,

I AM SENDING YOU A MORE COMPLETE ADDRESS LIST OF MY ONLINE FRIENDS. I DON'T THINK ANYONE WILL OBJECT AND ALL I CAN SAY IS 'I'M SORRY' BUT IT WILL HELP YOU GET THE MESSAGE OUT ABOUT 'SILENT VICTORY' THEN WE ARE DOING WELL. WE WISH YOU THE BEST HOLIDAY SEASON EVER. WE WILL CONTACT YOU SOON ABOUT GETTING A STOCK OF YOUR BOOK, 'I SERVED'. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HELPING IN IT'S PROMOTION AND MAYBE SOME OF OUR OTHER FRIENDS WILL BE JUST AS ANXIOUS. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

SINCERELY,
RICK AND KIM JONES

PS: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK YOU HAVE PUT INTO THE DOCUMENTARY. YOU DESERVE IT.

Ricky,
Have some Great News!
Hello everyone,

Don and I are happy to announce that "Silent Victory: the Story of
Company F, 51st Long Range Patrol (Airborne) Infantry" was one of the
documentary winners at the Telluride Independent Film Festival, which
was held this past week, from December 6th to 9th. For a complete list
of winning feature films, short films, documentaries, and screenplays,
go to www.tellurideindiefest.com. Click on the "Year 2001 Winners" link.
You'll find "Silent Victory" listed with the documentary winners, which
follow the names of the feature film and short film winners.

This brings to two the number of awards "Silent Victory" has won so far:

*Bronze Award in the 2001 Telly Awards
*Documentary Winner in the 2001 Telluride Independent Film Festival.

The above awards were won despite the fact that we still have a little
more editing work to do on "Silent Victory" to make it ready for
broadcast and home video distribution. Those of you who have seen a
preview of "Silent Victory" know that it was in low-resolution format at
that time. The work we'll be doing to upgrade it to high resolution form
will begin later this month. We'll be tweaking the audio a bit, adding
more sound effects and music, doing some changes to the graphics, and
finalizing the end credits. If all goes as planned, we hope to have the
finished documentary ready for distribution by March, 2002. We'll be
submitting the finished version to some more film and documentary
festivals. We'll keep you posted on status and about any good news.

Thanks,
Annette and Don Hall
