Like Hand Barrett, I gave my little speach to some school kids yesterday.
I am not one to get up in front of people and speak, but I gave it my
best. Told the kids what it means to be a Veteran. Most of these kids
do not have parents or any one close to them to relate stories of service
is the Armed Forces to them. Told them that being a Veteran meant you
had served your Country, during war or peace time. Also told them that
one of the best things about being a Veteran was serving with people who
became your friends and not being able to forget what a great group of
friends they were and if it had not been for being in the service, you
would have missed that. Don't want to go on and give the whole speach,
but like Hand, I want to thank all of the others who have provided insights
for their help. My wife and I hope to attend the Reunion in 2002, if
God is willing. Hope to meet some of you there.

I don't know how to say thank you to the following men. I have never
met any of them but they are indeed brothers. They gave me ideas and encouragement
and I do apppreciate the time they took to respond to my plea for help
on my speech. I gave it today in front of a group of middle school kids.
I talked about my dad, my hero. I talked about the 199th and friends we
lost. I talked about ideas such as the equality of all men, toleration
and love. I talked about the wall and gold star mothers. I could not have
done it without you. Thanks to David Murray, David Kendal, Rick Jones,
Steve McDonald, Newt Covault, William Brockner, Lindy Lowery, Lavern Steinbrunner,
Yogi Yeostros, Terry Beckelic, Mike Swearingen, George Leeper. I feel
that I may have left someone out. If I did let me know. Thanks again

FOLKS, IT SEEMS I’VE HAD AN AWFUL LOT TO COMMENT ON IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS
AND IF I AM A NUISANCE JUST SCROLL ON BY MY ENTRY. I ASK FOR YOUR PRAYERS
FOR MY FATHER BEFORE HIS DEATH IN SEPTEMBER, AND YOU ANSWERED. JOHN MC
BRIDE AND I ASK FOR YOUR PRAYERS FOR LOUIS YEOSTROS AND HIS WIFE, LAURIE,
DURING THEIR ILLNESSES, AND YOU ANSWERED. SOME OF YOU ARE ON MY EMAIL
LIST AND TO THOSE I SENT OUT THE SCHEDULE OF MY FATHER’S VA MEMORIAL IN
BONHAM, TEXAS THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY AT 1 P.M., AND I RECEIVED AN ANSWER.
CHARLIE ENGEL,FORMERLY WITH 2ND/40TH ARTY. IMMEDIATELY EMAILED ME THAT
HE WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS “YEAH, SURE” AND I TOOK
IT AS A NICE GESTURE. WELL, LOW AND BEHOLD, HE WAS HERE AT 9 A.M. YESTERDAY
AND DROVE MY WIFE AND ME TO THE MEMORIAL THAT IS A TWO HOUR DRIVE FROM
HERE AFTER HE HAD DRIVEN FROM HIS HOME IN HOT SPRINGS,ARK. WE HAD NEVER
LAID EYES ON EACH OTHER BEFORE YESTERDAY BUT IT SEEMED AS THOUGH WE HAD
KNOWN EACH OTHER ALL OUR LIVES. LAST EVENING WE SHARED A FEW STORIES
ABOUT OUR TIME IN COUNTRY AND, OF COURSE, WE ENJOYED A FEW COLD BEERS
TOGETHER. CHARLIE LEFT THIS MORNING ABOUT 8:30 HEADING BACK HOME AFTER
INVITING US TO JOIN HIM AND HIS FRIENDS IN THE HOT SPRINGS VETERANS DAY
PARADE. IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME IN THE STRENGTH OF BROTHERHOOD THAT
WE REDCATCHERS SHARE. I COULD NEVER EXPRESS MY THANKS ENOUGH TO ALL OF
YOU FOR BEING SUCH CARING PEOPLE. HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO ALL AND GOD BLESS

To Hand Barrett. I read over your post on 10-30 and did not remember
the poem you asked for and did not think any more about it. Now I find
myself in the same position as you. I have been asked to speak to a primary
school about being a Veteran and also loyalty. It is scary ain't it!
As someone else stated we all took an oath when we entered the Army.
Before that we spoke the Pledge of Allegiance. I am telling the kids
how important this oath is also. Being loyal to your country, serving
when asked, and asking nothing for your service to the U.S. We enjoy
so many freedoms now because others before us served. We must not give
up any of our freedoms and defend them with all our might, least we lose
them. Remain loyal to your country. This is the message I will try to
deliver.

For Hand Barrett, Just tell it like it was.
My $0.02 is below,
from a post to another site:
They chuckle at us, for thinking
of ourselves as "Soldier","Sailor","Marine", in the present tense, decades
after we last wore hard clothes. They may be vaguely aware that we took
an oath upon joining, an oath very similar to that sworn by the President.
It has never crossed their minds that when we mustered-out, we turned-in
our weapons and equipment,
BUT NOBODY TOOK BACK THAT OATH!
The
bond between fighting men, which we so value, they have never felt. You
can't explain "blue" to the blind. We are bound to each other, to the
President, to the Nation, and to the kids now wearing the uniform (who
are, I believe, very nearly as good as we were), in a more tangible form
than are those who have not served. They talk, we do.

I was a mortar squad leader when the unit formed up at Ft. Lewis in
1967 until the first few months in Vietnam. I went into the field as
a FO, with C company, when we switched out our 81 mm's for 4.2's. I learned
about this site in a phone conversation with someone I don't even know.
We were just chatting and he asked about my military background. Turns
out his dad was in the 199th in the artillery, and he accompanied his
dad to the reunion earlier this year. So he knew all about it. Small
world, eh? Certainly smaller now than it was then.

Thanksgiving 2001 is just coming up and never does a Thanksgiving go
by that I don't remember Thanksgiving 1969. I'd been in country 3 weeks
and it was my first contact. We had just received mail while on operation
near the known VC village of Za Bin Luc, just northwest of Zuan Loc.
We had set up a perimeter around a Buddahist shrine when we got ambused
and took several casualties. I remember taking cover behind a banana tree
and thinking, this isn't gonna stop a AK47 round. The next day we were
the springers of a counter ambush and it was payback time. We carried
the VC bodies back into the village and laid them out in the square for
Mamasan and Papasan to claim them. As we head into another Thanksgiving,
lets all give thanks for making it home alive and remember those who didn't.

2nd of the 3rd,----Alpha----1st Platoon----April, 1969----June, 1970
Autumn run Chinook Salmon were spawning up Issaquah Creek 32 years ago
today just as they are this Fall. I could see gulls wheeling around the
creek as my father's car passed over it on the way to the Induction Station
in Seattle. The next morning I awoke at Fort Lewis before reveille and
listened to the sounds of the other recruits around me sleeping in the
darkness. The day was cold and cloudy. Five and a half months later
I joined Alpha Company at the Bien Dinh Bridge and that night my squad
pulled my first ambush near a village several 'klicks away. A week later
our Platoon Leader, his RTO, and the point man were wounded by a mine
near Elvira. A week after that Gale Brown died. The days, the weeks,
the months went by like that.
Time is hard to understand. Those
days seem no more distant from me than the keys of my keyboard. Yet they
seem no more substantive at times than the shadows and flickers that could
be salmon or just ripples and eddies in the evening darkness of Issaquah
Creek. Reaching into my memory to grasp them is as difficult as reaching
into the Creek's cold, swift water to grasp a fish. What am I really
remembering? Have they become only the ghosts of that time, as insubstantial
and as uncertain? Halloween, 1968. Draft day. Trick or Treat.
A
new time is upon us and our time is beginning to pass as surely as it
did for the veterans of all our past wars, including Korea, and especially
World War II. Remember, guys! 100 years from now the memories will have
vanished and only the hard stone of the monuments and faded images of
photographs will remain. Especially remember our friends and buddies
who were wounded and those who died. Most others can't because they weren't
there and because life's daily valleys and mountains don't allow that
luxury. Time flows on. New challenges arise. People and nations are
moved further and further from the past by change. At least if each of
us holds on to the names and memories of buddies until our own end someone
will have remembered and acknowledged the reality of their heroism.
Gale
Brown, Michael Dixon, Pat Dwyer, Jerry Kocanda, John Richard, Lynn Shugart,
George Butts, John Martin, Mark Muehe, Joe Laziki, rest in peace.
Take
care guys. Here's to us and those like us.

I must agree with Rick Jones about Chris Sausser's comments. Although
I am no angel, as none of us are, those remarks are not any I would chose
to explain to him. I also mean no offense to Chris but ask him to have
remarks removed.

KAMMY,
THANKS FOR YOUR CONDOLENCES; THEY ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
IT MAY BE BEST THAT DAD DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE 9-11
ATTACK. THAT WAS MEANT AS AN "IN BODY" LOOK AT THE CURRENT EVENTS. I'M
SURE HIS SPIRIT IS BEHIND US ALL TO ERASE THIS THREAT THAT PLAGUES THE
ENTIRE WORLD. DAD DID HIS DUTY IN WWII AS A COMBAT ENGINEER AFTER VOLENTEERING
TO SERVE IN THE US ARMY FOR 1 YR. AND 11 MOS. IN THE EUROPEAN CAMPAIGNS.
JUST BEFORE HIS FUNERAL I LEARNED THAT HIS EAME VICTORY MEDAL BORE 5 BRONZE
STARS THAT MEANS THAT HE FOUGHT IN ALL 5 MAJOR BATTLES IN RHE EUROPEAN
THEATER. IT GAVE ME GREAT PRIDE TO SPEAK AT HIS FUNERAL ABOUT WHAT HE
HAD CONTRIBUTED AT THAT TIME IN HISTORY FOR HIS COUNTRY. EVEN THOUGH HE
COULD NOT SPEAK JUST BEFORE HIS PASSING THE FAMILY COULD SEE IN HIS EYES
AN "APPOLOGY" FOR LETTING GO. HE WAS QUITE A MAN AND ALL THAT KNEW HIM
ARE FEELING A GREAT LOSS. THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE 199TH HAVE GIVEN ME
AND MY FAMILY A UNIQUE FEELING OF COMFORT BECAUSE OF ALL THE PRAYERS THAT
WERE EXPRESSED IN PERSONAL EMAILS AND CARDS AND LETTERS. TO THANK EVERYONE
PERSONALLY WOULD TAKE A VERY LONG TIME. SO WITH THAT IN MIND, THANKS EVERYONE
FOR ALL YOUR CARING AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. IT HAS MADE HIS PASSING MUCH
MORE EASY TO BEAR. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL. LET US ALL PRAY THAT OUR MEN
AND WOMEN COME OUT OF THIS SITUATION WITH HEALTHY MINDS AND BODIES. I
LOVE YOU ALL. RICK JONES

I arrived in country in January 1969. Was attached as the FO for D 4/12
Inf, CPT Cunningham was the CO, he was replaced by a CPT Stover shortly
after I arrived. We also had the best NCO I ever knew in our Mortar Platoon
. His name was SFC "Rock" Collins. I moved over to B 5/12 Inf around
the end of April 1969 and CPT Goodwin was the CO, followed by a CPT Manus
for a very short period of time and then CPT Rantala. Had some really
great PLT Leaders in Bravo Company; 1LT Carey Walker, now a retired COL(0-6),
living in Monroe, LA., and 1LT George Sheridan, from Hilo, Hawaii. I
left the field as the FO in September of 1969 and rejoined Charlie Btry,

Dear Fellow Redcatchers:
Please accept this posting as
an invitation to attend the opening ceremony of the Armed Forces Museum
at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on Saturday, October 27, 2001. The ceremony
is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM.
Many of you will recall that
Camp Shelby was the site where the 199th Light Infantry Brigade trained
before deploying to the Republic if South Vietnam. In fact, the 199th
LIB was the only active military unit to train at Camp Shelby before its
deployment to Vietnam. Because of this the Camp Shelby Museum, constructed
at a cost of $5 million, has set aside a special display to honor the
199th Light Infantry Brigade. I am sure you don’t want to miss seeing
this outstanding display of our beloved Redcatcher Brigade.
Please
plan to attend the opening ceremony and witness, first hand, the 199th
LIB display. You’ll be glad you did. Hope to see you there.

THIS IS AN EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM A FELLOW REDCATCHER. I THOUGHT SOME
OF YOU MIGHT WANT TO SHARE THE THOUGHTS WITH YOUR FAMILY. IT BRIGHTENED
MY DAY AND I HOPE IT DOES THE SAME FOR YOU.
I AM THANKFUL...
FOR THE HUSBAND WHO COMPLAINS WHEN HIS DINNER IS NOT ON TIME.......
BECAUSE HE IS HOME WITH ME, NOT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
FOR
THE TEENAGER WHO IS COMPLAINING ABOUT DOING DISHES.........
BECAUSE
THAT MEANS SHE IS AT HOME & NOT ON THE STREETS.
FOR THE TAXES
THAT I PAY....
BECAUSE IT MEANS THAT I AM EMPLOYED.
FOR
THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY.....
BECAUSE IT MEANS THAT I HAVE
BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS.
FOR THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE
TOO SNUG.........
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT.
FOR
MY SHADOW THAT WATCHES ME WORK.....
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM OUT IN
THE SUNSHINE.
FOR A LAWN THAT NEEDS MOWING, WINDOWS THAT NEED
CLEANING, AND GUTTERS THAT NEED FIXING......
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE
A HOME.
FOR ALL THE COMPLAINING I HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT.....
BECAUSE IT MEANS THAT WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
FOR THE
PARKING SPOT I FIND AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT.....
BECAUSE
IT MEANS I AM CAPABLE OF WALKING AND THAT I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TRANSPORTATION.
FOR MY HUGE HEATING BILL.....
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM WARM.
FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH THAT SINGS OFF KEY.....
BECAUSE
IT MEANS THAT I CAN HEAR.
FOR THE PILE OF LAUNDRY AND IRONING....
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE CLOTHES TO WEAR.
FOR WEARINESS
AND ACHING MUSCLES AT THE END OF THE DAY..... BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE
BEEN CAPABLE OF WORKING HARD.
FOR THE ALARM THAT GOES OFF IN
THE EARLY MORNING HOURS.... BECAUSE IT MEANS THAT I AM ALIVE.
AND
FINALLY.......
FOR TOO MUCH E-MAIL.....
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE
FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME.
SEND THIS TO SOMEONE YOU CARE
ABOUT AND BRIGHTEN THEIR DAY!

Taking great liberty on behalf of the rest of you, I have sent the following
message to the active 2nd battalion, 3rd infantry, currently stationed
at Fort Lewis, Washington.
John
"*3/2 2-3 IN BN S3 - MAJ
Denis Rehfeld"
"White MAJ Jerry (E-mail)"
Majors Rehfeld
and White, should the occasion present itself, please inform the officers,
non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men of the 2nd battalion, 3rd
infantry, that those of us who served in the battalion while it was attached
to the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, from April, 1966 to October, 1970,
are thinking of all of you, praying for all of you, and offer you, without
conditions, our whole-hearted support now and regardless of what comes.
As
men who served in combat in troubled times, and even while at times feeling
unsupported, we believe we understand all of the emotions that Infantrymen
feel. When a nation is full of grief and anger the cry for War easily
flows from the mouths of its people. However well justified, calling
for war and fighting war are very different things.
Please
know this, if you are called to combat there will be no moment when you
are alone on the battlefield. The veterans of the 2nd of the 3rd will
be there with you in thought and prayer. Many of us would rather that
we be there than you simply because combat and life have taught us that
the young should not have life and its opportunities taken from them.
That is not to be. Regardless, if there is anything that any
of us as veterans in the 2nd of the 3rd, 199th Light Infantry Brigade
can do for you, now or at any time, please do not hesitate to ask us.
Our web-site addresses are below.
199th: http://www.redcatcher.org/
2nd
of the 3rd: http://www.the-old-guard.org/
We stand behind you,
with you, and for you, always.
Here's to all of us, and those
like us.
Best wishes and greatest hopes.
Sincerely,
John

After
the events of earlier in the week, our country needs us again. This time
we won't be required to carry rifles, but there will be many ways in which
we can help. Let's give our young soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen
more support than we were given. They will need the ENTIRE country behind
them, not just their own families. Let's pray for our leaders, the armed
forces, the FBI, and all other groups who can identify these cowards and
shine a spotlight on the REAL enemy who ordered the attack.
There's
an old saying that applies to America at this time. "We're mad as hell,
and won't take this anymore."

I live out on the Island not far from New York City and couldn't even
begin to explain how I feel about Tuesday's attack on our country. The
people that perpetrated this attack and their supporters must pay the
the very highest price for the action they have and do choose to take
against our people and nation and I am most confident that our government
will take care of it. I also think it very important that we channel our
anger in the right direction. I have heard a lot of hate talk about American
citizens that are not American born, we are the greatest nation in the
world and by far the greatest people in the world. We are the people that
fight for the right of people to go upon their daily life with out fear
as part of that daily life, we are the good guys, we are the defenders
of what is good in the world. In short we are the best and let no man
change what is great about us as a people, let no innocent man, women
or child fear us for as a nation we mean no harm to the innocent of the
world. Please remember who we are and what we are. We are better than
the people who would like to destroy our great nation and we must stop
them no matter what the cost but we should not put fear in to the hearts
of those that only want what we want, to live in peace. We can not hate
someone because his brother means us harm but we will have to destroy
his brother. We are Redcatchers, we are America's finest and I am proud
to be one of you and again I say let no man change what makes us great.
Try not to hate your neighbor unless your neighbor has truly cast the
first stone. God keep us well to fight another day.

HAS GIVEN ME A GREAT RESPECT OF THE RECONDOS WHO SOUGHT OUT THE ENEMY

Dear
Friends,
Among the slain in the Pentagon on Tuesday was Lt.
Gen. Timothy J. Maude who served as Postal Officer, Chief of Administrative
Services Division and Chief of the AG Personnel Actions Branch for the
brigade in 1967-68. I had just met him in July of this year when I gave
him a briefing on the Vietnam records in the National Archives. Special
interest was put on the 199th Infantry Brigade (Light)(Separate). He was
interested in the Redcatcher Association but he was a very busy man and
I don't know if he got around to joining. He had aged very little and
except for his white hair was as robust and active as a young lieutenant.
I hope you all remember Tim Maude in your prayers.

I've read the comments some have made on the 199th site regarding
the terrorist
attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.. I wish I had
something profound and
enlightening to say. I wish I knew what motivated
our leaders during the years
of the Vietnam War. I wish that the truth
of that, or of many things were as
plain and evident as the sun in
the sky, the smile on a baby's face, or a kiss.
In my experience
the events, and the motivations of the leaders of the Vietnam
War,
and indeed few events, especially those diplomatic or political, are rarely
self
evident. But we do know these things: we all have responsibilities and
commitments
and opportunities.
Our best responses now as former soldiers
fully aware of the gravity of this
situation and the likely repercussions
are to remain as focused on our
commitments, as dedicated to our responsibilities,
and as open to opportunities
to contribute as is humanly possible.
I
don't know, and probably never will know, whether what I'm told about
this
event, as about many events, including Vietnam, is the truth
or is not. I don't
completely care. I can know what I believe is right
and what is wrong and what
is good and what is evil.
What
happened on Tuesday was evil. My tremendous anger about it is a valid
emotion.
But that I convert that anger into legitimate, constructive action is
important.
I can do all that I can to help my family, to help my neighbors, and
to
help my nation. The rest will sort it itself out.
I went to Vietnam
because I believed it was the right thing to do. I still do,
regardless
of the motivations of any leader of that time and regardless of my
feelings
about that experience since. I believed in you guys then, and I believe
in
you and your families and your communities now.
My best wishes
and fervent hopes to all of you now and in the future as this
tragedy
plays itself out. Take care.

Gary Levine? Mark Walsh? Bill Paquette?? Murray Alter? Could someone
who knows how to contact them please let us know if they, and their families,

FELLOW REDCATCHER,THESE LAST TWO DAYS HAVE BEEN A GREAT TEST OF THIS
NATION'S MORAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PATRIOTIC FIBER. WE HAVE A DUTY AS EXPERIENCED
VETERANS OF VERY GHASTLY ACTS OF INHUMANITY TO HELP HOLD THIS WAY OF LIFE
TOGETHER IN ANY WAY WE CAN DREAM OF; WE'VE SEEN WHAT SUCH CARNAGE HAS
DONE TO A MUCH MORE INNOCENT COUNTRY AS THE ONE THAT WE HONORABLY SERVED

LET THE SAME SLACK ATTITUDES DISSUADE WHAT WE KNOW IS THE ONLY PATH OF
ACTION FROM THIS POINT TILL THE END OF THIS MADNESS. LET US ALL PRAY FOR
OUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS AS TO A QUICK SOLUTION
TO THE IMMEDIATE SITUATIONS AND HOPEFULLY TO A HUMANISTIC END TO THE THREAT
OF TERRORISM THAT LOOMS OVER OUR NATION AT THIS MOMENT. LET'S BAND TOGETHER
AND HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE HEALING OF SO MANY AMERICANS AFTER OUR
SURE VICTORY IN THE NAME OF DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM. I LOVE YOU ALL AND
HOPE AND PRAY THAT THIS NIGHTMARE IS SOON RESOLVED. WITH DEEP REGRET AND

America Attacked! Brothers, let us remember what the Government did
to us, what with the people who thought we should turn the other cheek,
or we should be better than the enemy and therefore we did not win the
war in Vietnam, because we backed down - and we didn't go ahead and get
Kadafi or Sadam Hussein, because we backed down. Do you really think
that the Government is going to go full speed ahead and get Ben Laden
or make Afganistan turn him over to us or else? Do we continue giving
millions of dollars for reseach regarding the mating habits of the Tsitse
Fly while Government funding has been cut for the CIA to use for intelligence?
I suppose any idiot with a cam corder could have figured this out. In
plain English brother, if they would have let us gone forward in Vietnam,
I think we would not have lost as many lives. Now with the assasins hijacing
and destroying tens of thousands of lives, what do you think our fantastic,
glorious Government is going to do besides sit on their a... and feed
us a lot of s...t? Bring back memories? Now it is on our Homeland!
Think about it!
