RECENTLY A LADY NAMED SANDIE EMAILED ME FOR PERMISSION TO USE MY PHOTO
IN HER WEB SITE WHICH IS A TRIBUTE TO VETS. HE DIDN'T HAVE ANYONE INVOLVED
IN WAR TO DO THIS FOR EXCEPT GUYS LIKE US. SEEING THAT SHE WAS SINCERE,
I GLADLY PERMITTED HER TO USE MY PIC AND GAVE HER MY UNIT, DATES SERVED,
COMMENDATIONS, AND THE USE OF MY PHOTO. SHE EMAILED ME AGAIN WITH THE
LINK TO MY PAGE OF TRIBUTES AND I WAS REALLY PLEASED TO SEE WHAT SHE IS
DOING. SOME OF YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN EMAILING HER IF YOU WANT TO BE
ADDED TO HER SMALL COLLECTION. JUST SEND HER A PHOTO OF YOURSELF EITHER
OF ONE NOW OR ONE FROM VIETNAM ALONG WITH WHATEVER YOU WANT ON THE PLAQUE.
YOU MAY VIEW MINE AT: http://sandiesweb.com/military/tribute/links/tribute_page8.html
YOU'LL SEE MY ICTURE AT THE LOWER RIGHT ON THAT PAGE AND SOME OTHER REDCATCHERS
ON THE NEXT TWO PAGES. SHE WILL ALSO LINK YOUR PLAQUE BACK YOUR WEBSITE
OR BACK TO THIS SITE IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE OF YOUR OWN. IT MADE ME FEEL
GOOD AND I HOPE WE SHOW HER THAT WE ARE PROUD OF THE PART WE PLAYED IN
THAT WAR. BEST REGARDS, RICK JONES

cases you performed the impossible, and saved lives. When the s--t hit

salute you. Thank you for being there for us.

from Seattle, Washington
2nd of the 3rd,----Alpha----1st Platoon----April, 1969----June, 1970
Carol, thanks for your comments. As an RTO for squad and platoon leaders,
and then for three COs in Alpha 2/3 I called in more dust-offs than I
can remember to take men to 93rd Evac for everything from wounds, to snake
bites, to scorpion stings and centipede bites, malaria, heat stroke, and
on and on. In the eight months I was in the field, 93rd Evac, to my knowledge,
saved all but ten of those and the ten men who died were sadly dead before
they left the field. As Bob said in his message, we all very much appreciated
then the work that you and those who worked with you, whether as med-evac
pilots or surgeons, did to help us. Heroism is a funny thing. It's sometimes
very obvious and commended, but usually not and unrecognized. Those of
us who served in combat units, regardless of our assignments, recognize
the quiet, largely unrecognized heroism exhibited by so many who weren't

Carol, thanks for stopping by and leaving your note to us Vets who served
in country. We all appreciate the care, treatment and kind words and being
there for us that made our tour a little bit easier to cope with.I was
there about he same time as your tour sorry I never got to meet you but
hey I'm glad that I didn't visit your area of operation.I spent most of
my time working the area around FSB Mace with the 105 guns, airmoble. We
all appreciate the fine job you did for us and we also are sorry that
we couldn't save all our brothers. Thanks again and God Bless, welcome home
to you.I'm not sure I would have spent extra duty there; I just wanted
to get out in one piece.Regards,Bob

Someone suggested I come by and leave a note in the guestbook, so here
I am. I served as an Army nurse in Vietnam from 5/69-12/70. My first
year in country I was at the 29thEVAC/3rd Surgy in Binh Thuy. I extented
my tour (yea, I'm a bit tetched!) and was transferred to the 45th Surg
at Tay Ninh in 5/70 and was there until we closed out the hospital at
the end of September that year. I finished my extension at the 93rd EVAC
in Long Binh. People often asked me why I stayed longer than I had to
over there, and I tell them it was because of guys like you. You know
you were all our heroes. I only feel sorry that we could not save all
of you that came into our care. I just have to tell myself we tried our
best..just like all of you did. Welcome home bro's!

Hi folks, just an update and THANK YOU for all the prayers and well

released from the hospital to go home in a Hospice situtation. She had
a major stroke after some biopsies were done, lost movement on her left
side. The cancer has spread throughout her body, and the doctors think
she has less than 2 weeks to go. It spread through her lymph system,
brain, liver etc. Soooooooooooo, need I say the rest?

Hi Guys! I've been hooked up with the 199th since Ron Orem peeled me
off The Wall, Memorial Day, 1984. That same evening, I went to the reunion
dinner at the Key Bridge Marriott, was given a great welcome, and met
Redcatchers who had known me in Nam thus beginning my healing time. If
you have known me since then, you also know that I was once married to
a Redcatcher named Wayne MacKirdy for a brief period after Nam. For many
years, I snuck into the reunion asking if he was there, prepared to duck
and run for the bunker. Well, just before Memorial Day, I came online
to say hello and that I'd miss everyone at the reunion. I was transfixed
by the message that had been left shortly before mine... it was from
Wayne. He contacted me after checking the guestbook, and we have been
talking via email ever since. I'm taking time to tell you this because
many of you know that I was hurt and bewildered when I first came to you...
my second marriage wasn't going a lot better than my first! :-D) Wayne
and I want you to know that we have both been changed by choosing to put
Christ solidly in our lives. He became a minister, remarried, and went
back into the Army as a chaplain. I have divorced my second husband as
he decided to come out of the closet (and I'm not talking about the Vietnam
vet closet) on the eve of our 20th anniversary 4.5 years ago. It's great
to be talking with Wayne again as we are doing a lot of cleaning out of
old wounds and loving the healing that is taking place for us. We are
good, caring friends now through the power of Christ because He is the
only one who could have brought this about. I'll be back at the DC reunion
next year as your Battalion Musician, and, who knows, perhaps Wayne will
be there to sing with me. Love to all of you... you guys have been my
lifelife.

I never had to change my monogram!! :-D))

I am trying to located some of my brother's buddies from the 199th.
My brother was George Farawelll from NJ. All I know is their first names
Glenn, Fred, and Dan. They were injured the week of Mar 16. 1969. Glenn
had a bad leg and feet injuries by stepping on a land mine.My brother
stepped on a land mine the day after and died after surgery.
I would
love to hear from them.
I am writing a book to publish my brother;s
letters and reflections of his family and friends 30 years later.
You
were all so brave and we never forgot you.
Please if anyone knows
anyone is that company, please contact me.
Thank your, Patti Enyedy

someday after you are gone. So, why not donate them to the Camp Shelby
Museum and help us preserve the Redcatcher history. It will be greatly
appreciated and we can get you a receipt for anything that you want one
for. By the way Wayne Williams is helping on this project not Wayne Miller(Who
was an old friend, that just passed away recently and I must have had
him on my mind when I typed in Miller instead of Williams)sorry Wayne. Please

3rd Infantry (The Old Guard), 199th Light Infantry Brigade (Separate).
This site, previously a sub-domain of another site, now establishes itself
as a unique, separate and exclusive web site that is devoted to help bring
together the thousands of men that served and fought with this historical
renowned United States Army unit during the Vietnam War. Like the previous
site, this site represents and reflects that portion of The Old Guard’s
proud history that you, through your service and personal sacrifices,
made possible. For this your nation owes you a debt of gratitude for a
job well done.
Hope that all Old Guardsmen and all Redcatchers

On June 13th James Matthews posted a short note on the 199th website
regarding his uncle, Edward Matthews, who had served with the 199th and
had recently passed away due to complications from diabetes.
In
the interest of making sure his posting was recognized and that we cared
to hear about his uncle's death,
I sent him a short note of condolence
warning him that I hadn't served with his uncle, but nevertheless cared.
Mr. Matthews reply follows and I think many of you will care to read
it. Thanks everyone. John McBride
"Thank you very much for the
sentiment. My uncle certainly would have appreciated it.
He
had no other living relatives save for myself and my two sisters. Upon
going through his house after his death, we found a great many letters,
dated 1968, from friends he had served with in Vietnam - friends who were
later killed in action. Some of the letters were lying open by his easy
chair as though he had been going through them only recently. You would
have thought he just came home from the war. I don't think he ever recovered
from his experiences and the fact that many of his high school buddies
never returned.
When I was called up and deployed for Operation
Allied Force in '99, he made it a point to travel to Maryland and be there
when I got off the plane - this, despite the fact that he was in poor
health and didn't like to venture
too far from Missouri. He was
an American veteran in every sense of the word.
Thanks again,
and I will be sure to pass along your kind words to my sisters."

CAMP SHELBY HISTORY PROJECT: Redcatchers we need your help. The 199th
was the only Army Unit to train at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and subsequently
be sent to Vietnam for combat duty. The Post has just built a brand new
museum and is extremely anxious to record the history of the 199th at
their musuem. We as old Redcatchers are just as anxious to do likewise.
Therefore myself, Colonel Odom, Wayne Miller, Jim Diamond (The first
man to be awarded the DSC from our Brigade), Myron Kinrick and Tom Kinney
are working to gather some of the history and help the museum staff preserve
our legacy. PLEASE help us by checking your memorabilia goodies box for
old Vietnam and Camp Shelby action photographs that you would be willing
to donate to the museum. We would also like to have any other type of
memorabilia that you would be willing to donate. Remember most everything
you brought home will have history value to it and we would love to have
it in the museum. You can call me at 814-7261146 or 814-7233373. Colonel
