Led by the best Captain (Cpt/Maj Kent F. Miller) anyone could ever want, and trained by the best Platoon Sargeant a young Lt. could ever ask for, I survived the war and did a lot of growing up in a very short period of time. Incredible experience that few today can relate to.

There are a few private celebrations I have on different dates during the year. Today is the 31st anniversary of the day I left Bien Hoa and flew to Oakland. I'm sure that many of you can relate to the difficulty one has in comprehending how quickly the years have gone and yet how close in time those 14 months of life still seem. I don't dwell in them, I'm not obsessed with them, and I'm not owned by them, but I'll never forget them and I'll never forget the guys with whom I served. My thanks always to the men of Alpha 2/3 from April 1969 until I left for doing their job and for doing it so damn well. I would likely have gone home much earlier and in a very different fashion had they done otherwise. Take care everyone.

Hello to all. I just returned from Fort Benning. I could not stay for all the activities I have a Sunday Memorial Day Service at my church as I do each Memorial Day. For the two days that I was there I had a wonderful time meeting with men that I knew over 30 years ago and meeting new ones for the first time. All of us Redcatchers have something in common. We served our Country and we served together maybe not in the same Battalion, Company, Platoon or Squad but we served with the 199th in some capacity whether if be a Grunt, Cook, or any other job. We did our best but we all have one thing in common we were Redcatchers and will always be a REDCATCHER. God Bless all of you on this Memorial Day Weekend. Clay

Just a note to say hi to all my fellow vets of the 199th.Well another Memorial day is approaching and time to reflect and thank the Lord for returning us home to our loved ones and we prayer for our brothers who didn't make the return trip and those left behind. Some times the holiday is hard for all of us as it becomes a weekend picnic and the reflection of the Vet is forgotten.Let's remember the struggle and what we all went through for our country.Happy holiday to all.God bless, Bob

I just received the following email:

It is with great sadness that I report the passing on Monday,
May 14th, 2001 of Ralph Figueroa, 179th Military Intelligence
Detachment, OB Section. He served from May 1968 to May 1969 out of
Long Binh. He was 52.
The Redcatcher web site meant a great deal to Ralph. I am
sure many of you either knew him personally or got to know of him
through his posts to the site or reunions. Ralph was very proud to
have served, and he will be buried with his Redcatcher pin. I have
attached a photo of Ralph from his days in the service, as well as a
more recent photo.
Ralph always treated me with great kindness and respect.
Although it was my brother who married into his family, I always felt
that I too was part of the family. I will miss his warm laughter and
ready smile greatly.
Ralph leaves behind Beverly, his wife of over thirty years,
and their three daughters: Renee, who married my brother Larry on
November 30th, 1996; and her younger twin sisters, Dawn and Melanie.
If anyone is in the New York/New Jersey area, Ralph's funeral
will be held tomorrow, Friday, May 18th, 2001 at 10 A.M. at

St. Paul of the Cross
156 Hancock Ave.
Jersey City, NJ
(201) 798-7900

Those wishing to offer their condolences and/or assistance
(Ralph apparently left no will) should feel free to contact my
brother at larry.heidenberg@pobox.com . Thank you.

My Dad and my Grandma could never talk about Pat without crying, and now that I have lost both of them, I am seeking to build memories of my lost and beloved Uncle Pat through YOUR eyes...If you remember him at all, please tell me anything about him... sad stories, funny ones, everyday life, anything. You all came home to find your world changed, with conflicting feelings and dark memories. He would have come home to the same. I know he wont come home again, but those of you who did, thank you for everything you did, for the little Vietnamese children (Uncle Pat was charmed by them) and for a people who lost way more than we did when we left.

Hi Guys!! The good news is terrific and the bad news is horrific... Tha bad news is that I won't be at Benning for our annual reunion. I have been honored to be the Brigade Musician since you guys found me at The Wall in '84 and helped put me back together again. The problem is that I will just have returned from the trip of a lifetime to England and Northern Ireland with my cousin, the family genealogist... We'll be staying with relatives everywhere we go, and we are ecstatic!! So, I won't be there for the second year in a row to lead 'God Bless America' and 'Auld Lang Syne'... but I know that you'll do honor to those songs that mean so much to us who left friends behind in Nam and have lost more comrades since we came home. Thanks to all who wrote to let us know of friends who are still walking point for us, up ahead, just out of sight... Sing for them with all your hearts... The other good news for those of you who know me is that my divorce is finally happening... after 4+ years. We came to a financial settlement yesterday so it's all over but the paperwork... I'm back to being Kammy McCleery legally; and, hopefully, back to my old self in all other ways as well. I will be in DC in November at the DMZ to the Delta Dance on the 10th at the Doubletree Hotel in Arlington or Alexandria... just bring your dancing boots... :-D) I love you all dearly... always have and always will...
Kammy, who is still without email at home...
PS: Thanks to those of you who sent notes a while ago... You are also great morale boosters!!!

I took command of Company C in a rubber plantation south of Long Bien the day after I arrived in country for my second RVN tour. We soon moved to FSB Elvira west of Saigon for ambush patrol operations, then north of Saigon to secure Hoc Mon Bridge and more ambush patrol operations, then to an operational area east of Long Bien where we were attached to the 11th ACR for company-sized search and destroy operations. In between we were attached for a time to the brigade of the 82d Abn Division in RVN and to other operations. Throughout my tour the company 1st Sgt was 1SG Moses Cartegena, a superb combat NCO in every respect. Shortly after I left the company he was killed in a minefield saving the lives of Co. C soldiers. When I think of Viet Nam, I remember the brave soldiers of Company C, mostly draftees, who served their country in a highly professionalism manner, and at great personal sacrifice. God Bless them all.

With a sad heart I want to let any of the guys who were in B Company 7th Spt BN during 68/69 who might have know LT Olson the Mechcanical Manitenance Officer in the Maintenance Shops that he died on 4/18/01. He had retired from the Army many years ago and had been a helicopter instructor at Fort Rucker after retiring from the Army. Ollie had to retire a number of years ago becasue his PTSD and pain from his helicopter crashes had got to him. When I last talked to him in March he wasn't doing well and had moved to NC to live with daughter but I didn't think he was going to die on us. May he finally REST IN PEACE.

The Old Guard----Charlie and Echo------------

I hope by now you have been made aware of and have paid a visit to the newly created web site ( www.HHS1958.org/TOG ) that honors one of the 199th LIB’s remarkable battalions, the 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard). This new site is unique in that it was designed and organized to allow each member assigned to The Old Guard a place on the Internet to share their memories and post their personal photos and memorabilia for the specific unit they were assigned. Found at this new site are pages set aside for the specific companies/platoons of The Old Guard. From the Battalion Headquarters to Company E, each organization within the 2nd Battalion now has its own place not only to post photos and memorabilia but a place where you can leave a message, post your current mailing and email addresses, and even list your actual duties. Please stop by and pay a visit to this new site, you’ll be glad you did.
