I can't remember much but I have some records which I will check out.
I presently work in the Marshall Islands so
its going to take time.
Retirement isn't far off so I will be happy to hear from men who were
there during the TET
when I attend a reunion. I was a grunt and was
promoted to E-5 in the field but I never was a squad leader. . I
have
wondered is there anyway to check out a list of the men and find out my
exact unit. See you all someday.

to locate guys to attend our reunion and hope that we can all get together
again . I 'm unsure what to expect, and I have had a hard time making
up my mind as to whether I should go to this event. My final thought
is that if it turns out not to be as I might have expected what have I
lost? But i'm convinced that there might be something very special and
rewarding waiting in Georgia so i'll be there and urge you to do the same.
If you too are unsure about attending this event, send me an email and

Old Guard----Charlie and Echo------------
I hope by now you have been made aware of and have paid a visit
to the newly created web site ( www.HHS1958.org/TOG ) that honors one
of the 199th LIB’s remarkable battalions, the 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry
(The Old Guard). This new site is unique in that it was designed and organized
to allow each member assigned to The Old Guard a place on the Internet
to share their memories and post their personal photos and memorabilia
for the specific unit they were assigned. Found at this new site are pages
set aside for the specific companies/platoons of The Old Guard. From the
Battalion Headquarters to Company E, each organization within the 2nd
Battalion now has its own place not only to post photos and memorabilia
but a place where you can leave a message, post your current mailing and
email addresses, and even list your actual duties. Please stop by and
pay a visit to this new site, you’ll be glad you did.

3/7th----Charlie & Echo--------Aug or Sept 1969----October 1970
Thanks Roach for contacting me after all these years. I frequently
think about you guys and the good and bad times
that we had together.
For instance, every time I see a large earth mover with the 10' tall
tires clearing a roadway, I think
about when we were moving to Fire
Base HAM TAM. I was in the company jeep with two riflemen and a clerk
from Long
Bin. We were pulling a small trailer full of beer and mail
to meet Charlie Company at the new Fire Base. We pulled up behind
one
of these earth movers that was working Hwy #1 between Fire Base MACE and
HAM TAM, North of Swan Loc. The
spotter for the earth mover was trying
to signal the driver that there was a vehicle behind him, but the driver
couldn't
see the spotter, and as he had completed a swipe to clear
an area of road, he started backing up to take another swipe.
The
earth mover got closer and closer to us. The spotter was frantically
waving his hands and shouting at the driver of the,
earth mover,
but he had no idea that there was other traffic and continued to back
up. We all finally got concerned and
the clerk started trying to
put the jeep in reverse to back up. He was scratching gears, pumping
the clutch, and bouncing
up and down in the seat. When the earth
mover was about 3 feet away the two riflemen bailed out, and within a
split second
I also jumped. When I got clear, I turned, expecting
to see the worse, and was shocked to see the clerk still in the jeep fumbling
with
the shift as one of the huge tires of the earth mover slowly
collapsed the front of the jeep and was crawling (inching its way)
over
the hood of the jeep toward the passenger compartment. We (Me and the
riflemen) were yelling by then for the clerk to
jump out of the jeep.
But he just sat there, in some kind of shock, as the steering wheel was
actually being pushed toward
his chest. Then, luckly, just in the
nick of time the driver of the earth mover realized what was happening
and stopped.
The earth mover pulled forward a few feet, leaving
the front end of the jeep totally smashed. The clerk was still sitting
there,
in shock as we looked on in disbelief. I calmed myself after
a few minutes and got back in the jeep to radio for help. The
clerk
still didn't move. He just sat there staring forward. Finally, after
about 10 minutes, he look over at me and said,
in a soft stammer,
"wuh wuh well Sir, sh sh she (meaning the jeep) needed overhauling anyway."
It
was getting dark by then and we were miles away from either Fire Base,
but we were bent over in side splitting laughter.
I wish I could remember
the names of that clerk and the other guys who witnessed that.
Personal
note: After the 199th retired from Vietnam, I transferred to the 1st
Cav Division, and did another tour with the Cav in
the same general
area, North of Swan Loc. After leaving Vietnam, I got the assignment
that I thought I wanted at
Ft. Benning, with the Ranger Committee.
I guess I somehow got disgruntled and left the army in 1971. I went
back to
school on the GI Bill and have worked as an engineer for the
last 25 years. I run a small engineering firm in Columbus, OH,
but
spent the last year in Florida on contract work.
Anyway, thanks
again for contacting me. I will definitely make it to the next reunion.
I look forward to seeing you guys.
Best regards,
Oakland

Hi Guys, sorry to stuff the first entry up. I thought that Gen Weyand
had been a Commander of 199, but the list does not include him. I am,
therefore, confused; my intent was to try to get in touch with Gen Weyand,
mainly to check on some comments made about 199 in Nolan's Battle for
Saigon.
I am a Retd Lt Col, served in SVN as a scout pilot ( Aussie
version). We lived with 199, I think, for a short period in early 68.
As a 2 Lt, no-one told me much, just go dere and do dat. We sure got refuelled
by 199 in that period, although that Redcatcher pad was always busy, it
seemed, and Chinooks sure made it hard for H-13 's.

MG John F. Freund died 22 March 2001. MG Freund was the commander of
the 199th Light Infantry Brigade for a time in 1966-1967. The unit deployed
to Vietnam from Ft. Benning, jGeorgia. After he retired from the regular
Army he was the Adjutant General of Connecticut in charge of the Army
National Guard (1972-1982). He died in New York City at the age of 82
according to a story on the web page at redcatcher.org MG Freund and
his aid were wounded in 1967 while attempting to extract downed helicopter
crews. He and our former C Company, 2 Battalion, 3d Infantry (Old Guard),
3d platoon leader, Lt Howell Hilton, who was then the general's aid,
were injured. The former platoon leader, is now a NASA engineer. He recently
had reconstrutive surgery due to his wounds. He plans to attend the funeral.
The interment ceremony will be at 0900 at Arlington National Cemetery.
Anyone who plans to attend should come earlier (approximately 8:30 a.m.,
according to Arlington officials). Ask at the cemetery gate for directions
to the ceremony which should begin at the chappel. Phone number for Arlington

My fellow Redcatcher Warriors, if this latest China mess does not get
resolved quickly and our Navy air crew and aircraft are not released,
I urge you consider coming to WashDC and peacefully but strongly protesting
in front of the Communist Chinese Embassy. This is a test of our new

Freund but I see you've already have the news. Being from Connecticut

To All Old Guardsmen,
Yesterday, Colonel Louie Odom, the first
Battalion Commander of the 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry, called informing
me about the recent Reactivation Ceremony and telling me about his experiences
visiting our beloved Battalion. I was glad that he was able to attend
and represent all of us former Old Guardsmen that couldn’t make the journey.
For this we owe him our deepest gratitude.
Colonel Odom mentioned
seeing some of you there and was thrilled to have had the opportunity
in meeting you. As he said, “Wayne, I met so many outstanding soldiers,
both current and former members of The Old Guard, that it brought on goose
bumps.” His joy over the experience was truly something special and it
could be felt even over the telephone while he spoke. For those of you
that made it to the ceremony I am sure your share his feelings and I look
forward to one day hearing all about your trip.
To LTC John RisCassi,
Major Jay White and the others that planned and hosted this event, please
accept my personal thanks for taking the time and extending the courtesy
to all that attended. I know it meant a great deal to the former Old Guardsmen
to be treated with the respect you and the current men gave to them. Good
luck and God Speed on your duties.

For those that were there, just an update on my brief history. I was
the FO in the fire fight that Ch Liteky was awarded the CMH for.
He
was awesome. He pulled 20 people off the line that day, 5 Dec 97, while
we were being decimated. We sustained heavy casualties,
as many as
130 friendly KIA/WIA.
I finished my tour in RVN assigned to IIFFV
Artillery. I returned to the States in June 1969. Stayed on active duty
until
June 1972. I worked in a variety of jobs, including living in Australia
for almost a year in 1974.
When I returned, I went to Bible School
for a year, and in 1976 entered seminary. I graduated in 1979, and was
ordained in a
Baptist church. I pastored in northern California
for 5 years, and then returned to active duty in 1985 as a Chaplain.
From
Ch Liteky I learned to be with the troops. Too many chaplains would "hide
out" in the chapel, but not Ch Liteky.
I stayed on active duty for
10 years, and retired in 1995.
Since then I have been working
with Cadet Candidates for West Point (for 5 years) in Ft Monmouth, NJ,
and for the last year, with Cadet Candidates
for the Air Force Academy
in Colorado Springs. Have been teaching a Bible Class each week for these
fine young
men and women, equipping for the battles of life and the
battlefield.
If you are a praying person, pray for these young

Colonel Al Malone & Sgt. Tom Kennedy are organizing The 199th Light
Infantry Brigade Association’s - First Annual “Redcatcher Reconnaissance-in-Force
Golf Outing” on Saturday, May 26, 2001
Plans for Location, time and
format will be based on the number of golfers who commit to participating,
the course we play on and the tee-times available. We are considering
a 2-man scramble or a dogfight format. Lock & load (tee-time) will be
as early as possible. We will target 08:00-09:00AM
Cost is estimated
in the $40-50 per person range, will include greens fees and cart. Prizes
will be nominal. Bragging rights will be available to all! Lunch & refreshments
on the economy or at the turn will be on your own. Equipment rental is
doubtful, so plan on bringing your own clubs. Transportation will be by
POV.
Sign-up can be as a foursome, triples, doubles or singles, or
make a team(s) from your old Squad, Platoon, Company or Battalion! For
groups less than a foursome, we will pair to fill out the group.
No
prisoners will be taken!

Reactivation Ceremony for the 2nd of the 3rd, 10:00 hours, March 15,
Watkins Field, Fort Lewis, Washington, 40 miles south of Seattle, Washington:
If any of you plan on attending the ceremony on March 15, or are thinking
of attending, send me an e-mail and I'll forward you a list of accommodations
around SeaTac International Airport, near Seattle. I obtained them on-line
and they don't have telephone numbers, but those will be easy to obtain
with the address information I'll include. If your hardware and software
will allow it my e-mail will include maps of the locations of the hotels.
Fort Lewis is about 30 miles south of the airport and the area around
it isn't as interesting to stay in as the areas around Seattle, but if
you prefer to stay there I can send you the information for a Quality
Inn that is quite close to Fort Lewis. Best wishes to all. John.

My first six months in country was with Charlie Co 3/7 . We were on
a company sweep one day and Bravo Co got hit real bad. I was RTO at that
time and C and A companys were ordered to assist Bravo. When we got
ther , it was all over. Three dead, five wounded. One of the dead was
my best friend since basic training at Ft. Knox. His name was Robert
W. Shelton. That was my last night in the boonies. I went in to HHC
and reenlisted for 3 years, and into the 152nd MP Co. We were the MP's
who escorted all the troops, supplies, to different forward Base Camps.
That was was my last 6 months. does anyone out there remember the escort
whrn we had 82 vehicles to escort, and we got ambushed north of Gia Ray.
The only troops wounded that day was 12 out of 15 MP's. No KIA's. We
did our job, and did it well. Would like to here from someone.
