I pray that you old Redcatchers are celebrating the real reason for
the season, Christ's birth, and not just spending cash. If you are reading
this you have been blessed. Need I say more.
I worked in the R&U Yard,
drove the fork lift. For the MP's, I gave you all your club building.
I came over and built the bar myself. I can't remember your name, but
one of you gave me a German Mauser with the eagle and swastika on it and
helped me with the paperwork to bring it back as a war trophy. The MP's
would pick me up
in the R&U yard and I would go to Ben Hoa on raids.
Any of you guys remember this?

I enjoyed reading "The Dogs of War" in the December issue of Smithsonian
magazine. I recommend it to all,
especially you guys of the 49th
Scout Dogs. Steve Mac Robbie, a dog handler who worked with the 212th
Sentry
Dog Company in Long Binh and Tay Ninh in 1969 and 1970 was
interviewed for the article and is quoted there.
Abbreviated version
can be seen at: http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues00/dec00/wardogs.html
The
complete article is available at your local library.
Title came from
Wm. Shakespeare's line in Julius Caesar, "Cry 'Havoc' and let slip the
dogs of war".
One of the pictures shows vietnam troops boarding their
eagle flight slicks -- if anyone recognizes the symbol on
the nose
of the 2nd chopper, send me a note and tell me what it is. I've seen
it before. All the best.

Tis the time of the Season to wish you ALL a Happy Holiday, and a SAFE
New Years. If it hasn't been said before, then I say it now, "WELCOME
HOME BROTHERS". For the familes of those whom did not make it home, I
say THANK YOU for the Great Scarife your family has made in our behalf.
I believe as long is that name is remembered and honored, that person(s)
will never really pass away, until the last of us are gone! And that
is VERY IMPORTANT why we let our children know just how important things
like this Web Site are, and the reason behind it. An OLD Rock n Roll
song comes to mind, "Teach Your Children Well"...anyone remember it?
Shalom, Happy New Years, Merry Christmas, may our Lord and Saviour be
with you in this Holiday Season.
Lastly, to Tom Ward.....Thank you
from the bottom of my heart for you Labor of Love keeping this Web Site
going!

I have finally
uploaded all of my B/3/7 pictures to my web site. They start at Benning

If
anyone is being asked, "What did you do in the war grandfather?", these
are the pictures I sent home to my mother and I don't think they will
offend anyone.

I have seen at least eight of my old friends names listed on this site.
Bob Smalinckas (Slinky) contacted me last week after 32 years, he stirred
up many memories. My E-mail address is posted here if you want to talk.
I am going through some old boxes in the basement to try to find anything
that would help Bob in his search for information about our old detachment.
I know he would appreciate it if any of his old teammates would do the
same.

Just found out about this site after meeting fellow Redcathers at the
Veterans Day Ceremonies in DC at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Nov. 11,
2000. I keep promising to to attend one of the reunions and now having
met more of the guys I knew in DC, I'm definately going to try to attend.
My wounds have left me considerably disabled, restricting my ability to
get around. I will make every effort to get to this next reunion.
Thank
you for this great web site and hope you had a very nice Thanksgiving.

I hope all Redcatchers will express to their congressman and senators
their outrage at the disqualification of most of the absentee military
ballots in Florida. Ironically there wasn't much problem counting the
absentee ballots that came from Israel. I have emailed my congressman
and both senators in Virginia. Senator Warner, Ch. Senate Armed Services

Redcatchers had a wonderful Thanksgiving and you have finished the leftovers

Thanksgiving '69: I had just recently got out of the hospital with malaria
and was assigned as senior medic to Alpha co. I only spent about two
months with alpha co but they were very memorable. Great company! We
spent Thanksgiving checking out a bomb raid from the day before. Had a
meal inside a massive crater. Then most of the company went into checkout
the bunker complex. Ended up in a firefight and had to work pretty hard
to get out. I do not remember who our FO was but he was good--called
in some really accurate artillery and got our butts out of there. We sustained
no major casualties as I recall. Survived another day and am grateful
for every Thanksgiving since. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

I said this to Louis Yeostros this morning, but I'm saying it to all
of you as well, thanks to all of you, regardless of the roll you played,
for contributing to the fact that we got through the war. Thanks to those
who by dying, or who by not escaping being wounded, contributed so very
much to and for all of us. No 'thanks' for such sacrifice can ever by
enough. Experience would seem to say that those of us who were completely
lucky shouldn't have been . Who knows why events turn out as they do?
Measured in dollars if I were as lucky at lotteries since Vietnam as
I was lucky in Vietnam, I'd be a wealthier than Bill Gates. But then,
having won in 1969 and 1970 the lottery that counted most playing all
others becomes a child's game and the winning of them, however fruitful
financially, at the same moment unimportant and, relatively, inconsequential.
Happy Thanksgiving.

The Comanche Warriors of C 4-12 '69-'70 held a 30 year reunion 9-11
Nov in WashDC. Seventeen veterans plus wives and children attended.
We layed wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the 199th LIB
Memorial, both at Arlington Cemetery. At the 199th Memorial we read the
27 names of our comrades that died during our tour of duty. At Fort Myer
Officers' Club General John Brown, Center for Military History, spoke
about his organization and about the writing of the official history of
the Vietnam War, a current project. We played touch football on the Mall
near the Capitol and retired to the bar afterwards to lie about how nothing
has changed with our bodies and we continued to get to know each other
again. It was a wonderful emotional time and we shall repeat it again.
We also discussed returning to Dinh Quan (FSB Nancy)2005 where we will
march the company guidon down the streets of Xo Dat and Xo Xu. Redcatcher

2nd of the 3rd,----Alpha----1st Platoon----April, 1969----June, 1970
What a surprise thirty one years ago when I discovered that one of the
men in the infantry squad to which I was assigned was from Enumclaw, scant
miles from Issaquah, my
hometown. What a delight to find out that
the guy had a great sense of humor, was liked by one and all, was reliable,
hard working, and dependable.
I was with Walt Rex, that young
man, two months later in the middle of June when our infantry company,
Alpha, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade, was
ambushed
by a unit of North Vietnamese soldiers fighting from well concealed, dug-in
bunkers in jungle 50 miles east and north of Saigon near the village of
Xuan Loc.
Walt was among the many men wounded that day, sustaining
a nearly fatal head wound but he was saved by the efforts of several of
his buddies who braved automatic weapons fire to pull him to safety.
Despite
the drama of that day for those who were there, three decades later few
probably know, let alone think of what Walt went through that day, and
how it affected his life since. But those of us who knew him then, regardless
of how close we may be as friends with him now, do remember and always
will. He may downplay what he endured, but
for those of us who
shared his friendship those brief months he was in Vietnam, Walt Rex will
always be one of our heroes and one with whom few others can ever compare.
Happy Veterans Day, Buddy. The best wishes, deep thanks, and
highest regards from your friends of Alpha Company, 2nd of the 3rd: Larry
McCann, Gary Lauzen, Don Royal, John McBride, Louis Yeostros, Jim Deloughrey,
Larry Vomhoff, Ken
Shepersky, Everett Callahan, and all the others.

VA has just linked agent orange and type II diabetes. I have suffered
with this malady for a decade now. I always wondered where it came from.
Check out the following link if you are afflicted with this disease.

Since it is presuptive and
you have it then you are eligible for care and compensation.....

Just looking through the site again. I did find the E-address for Lt.
Phillip Beidler, the XO while I was there during my short stay. It is
pbeidler@english.as.ua.edu. I sent him a photo from Jan 1970, of himself
in front of one of the building at the rear base. To say he was suprised
is an understatement. I love this site and the soldiers it supports.

My brother was Lt. William I. Bouton (Bill). He was KIA on January 9,
1969. I was born in 1962 so I don't have a living memory of Bill. If you
served with Bill and have any memories or comments about him I would like
to hear them so that I could learn more about him and also share them
with other memebers in my family. Thank you.

This is my first visit to this site. It's been very emotional. I guess
that I've a lot of things locked up for 32 years. I was with A/4/12 on
5/30/68 when "friendly fire" killed my best friend and killed and wounded
others. I escorted my best friend back to be buried. Shortly after returning
to Nam, I became the Co. Clerk. Some names in these e-mails brought back
memories - Burgess, Wurdeman. Anyone remember Top Sgt Jerry Jungles?
Or SSGT Bradley Fordham? I hope to re-kindle some old freindships now.
