from Seattle, Washington
2nd of the 3rd,----Alpha----1st Platoon----April, 1969----June, 1970
Hello to all of you, Old Guard or otherwise, but especially to those
of you who served in the Old Guard. I served in Alpha Company from mid
April of 1969 until January 1970 when I was transferred to the TOC in
Headquarters Company in which I remained until I went home on June 7,
1970. If you were in Alpha Company, 2/3, at any time that the 199th was
in Vietnam I'd like to make you aware, if you don't already know it, that
in addition to the 199th's annual reunions, Alpha Company has a reunion
every three years. The reunions are usually attended by 15 - 25 men and
their wives and children. We always have a great time catching up on
everyone's lives, and, yes, we do spend some time talking about the war.
Although that is very therapeutic and although all of us learn things
each year that we had forgotten or didn't know, we mostly just enjoy each
other's company. In July this past summer Jim Duke) Deloughrey and his
wife Jerry hosted our most recent gathering in Boston. Gary Lauzen (Alpha,
2nd/3rd, 4/69 - 7/70) and I are hosting the next in Seattle in 2003. I
would like to extend to you an invitation to attend that reunion and I
hope that you contact either Gary or I at your convenience so that we
can keep you informed of the plans as they are made. Some of you reading
this may stop in to read comments but may never have signed the book.
Regardless, we would like very much to hear from you. There are hundreds
of men with whom we served that we would very much like to hear from and
to see. Lt. Col. (now General) Loefke (Honorary Alpha Company member
by extension of battalion command)? Capt. Balderson? Capt. Frye? Capt.
Hartley? Sgt.'s Fuller, Rodriguez, Hollis, Stoney? Dave Carr? Clarence
Barnett? Dave Sanders? 'Zeke' Murski? 'Pop' Stimson? Dozens of names
and faces come to mind and I know from the conversations I've had with
other men with whom we served that they also would like to see or hear
from old friends again. We sincerely miss you guys.
Please contact
me at:
john.mcbride@homestreetbank.com or 206-527-5498
Gary Lauzen
can be contacted at:

Just a note to bring fellow Redcatchers who spent some time in Cat Lai
up to date on events there. On August 29th, while attending an electric
power conference in France, I met the Chief Assistant Planner of Electricity
of Vietnam (known as EVN) with headquarters in Hanoi. I told him that
I had spent a year in Vietnam, 11 months of that time based in Cat Lai
as an American GI. He was surprised first to think that I could remember
such a small village (but a damn big part of my life!) and then indicated
that Cat Lai is the site of a major new electric power substation and
that the new Cat Lai substation is now known throughout the country as
a major development for the country's electrification program.
I hope
some of us get to see this development that the electricity company is
very proud of having completed. Vietnam is just becoming "electrified"
in much of the countryside.
Best wishes to everyone out there!

I'm looking for time lost buddies. When I joined my Company the CO
was a sinic Japanese Capt. Suzuki. My platoon sargent was a toothless,
$!%& poor excuse of a soldier that called our Platoon Leader (a 1st LT)
"a different breed of cat". My squad leader was a quiet, easy going E-5
from Youngstown, Ohio. My M-60 guy was named Morgan. His ammo bearer
was KIA on my second trip to the field. I belive we patrolled to the
north, north-east of Bien Hoa.
We had ARVN Rangers assigned to
our company, and a Sargent Ca to my squad. He was a dammed good soldier.
Some of his people carried M-1's!
We had an older guy in my
squad. We all called him Pops, and a chicano FNG that saved our asses
while we all slept during an ambush. (Remember the movie "Platoon"?
Well, same-same!)
There was a second CO during my time. I never
got his name because he came in and was KIA while I was in R&R. Then
came Capt. Stanley McLaughlin. This guy was a West Pointer and was as
cool as a snake. Dark hair and gray eyes. I remember because he was
outstanding, and loved a good fight. We kiked charlie's ass a couple
of times real good because this man knew what he was doing. The troops
all loved him.
I was wounded on December 27, 1967 after sharing
canned Puerto Rican typical Christmas food and Puerto Rican canned rum
with Franklyn Freeman from New York. Junior Lott, my RTO had been KIA
and Michael Cleveland, from Memphis (?) Tenn. had already been WIA in
the right arm. I later met him in Japan after I was WIA.
Does
anyone out there know of these guys? Please come back via jmarzan@caribe.net
I
wish I had all the Puerto Rican typical Christmas food and rum in the
Island to share with you all!
God bless!

village. I joined C/4/12 there in the dry season, January 1969, delivered
by what was probably a patrol boat of the 'riverine' forces. Learned
to sleep soundly upon the rutted tracks of water buffalo, set like concrete
in the dryed mud -- most akin tho sleeping on a rock pile. Promptly earned
my CIB and also learned sympathy for the poor Vietnamese villagers who
lived their humble life there and suffered the war imposed upon them.
Must have been a few hundred of us in the 199th that passed through at
one time or another.

The producers of the new film "Patriot" had an eye for historic detail.
They wanted things authentic. So they contacted a Redcatcher named Andy
Chernak. Andy did the research and recreated the buttons that would have
been worn on the uniforms and made 92,000 of them for the movie. You
get a close-up when Cornwallis is discussing the tactical situation at
Yorktown (the British Waterloo). Well done Andy.

The following is just my own opinion; The great thing about this site
is that it brings us together. Expressions of political advocacy, from
either side, are likely to drive us apart. They have their place, but
I feel that that place is not here. The chatrooms might be a better venue
for this.

I was saddened to read Tom Kennedy's report of 8/4/00, concerning Charles
Liteky's incarceration. Thank you Tom for the heads up. I was even more
saddened by Jim Eubanks' comments of 8/5/00. Jim, Charles Liteky is indeed
a very courageous person, whether it was earning the Medal of Honor in
Vietnam, or willing to be incarcerated for his beliefs at age 70. The
School of the Americas has long been a school of terrorism that rivals
any in the middle east. Its graduates have committed horrible attrocities
against people seeking basic human rights. It's presence in this country
is against everything we have been taught is right, and what we thought
we were fighting against in Vietnam. As long as we support such projects,
our citzens and soldiers continue to be at risk. I hope that we can all
do what we can to support Charles Liteky.

I am looking for anyone that was involved in the following action that
occured on 22 Feb 69 during the Post Tet Offensive. I was the assistant
squad leader of an MP Ambush and Recon Squad from B Co. 720th MP Bn.
In the early afternoon hours the squad was run off a hill by the remnants
of an NVA force that had attacked Long Binh Post at 0200 that morning.
A landing craft arrived on the back river (Song Buong) a tributary of
the Dong Nai, at the base of the hill we had previously occupied. Just
prior to their arrival we had run very low on rifle ammo and completely
out of M-60 ammo. There were approximately 20 members of the 199th commanded
by an African American Captain who came to our assistance. Just after
they landed one of his men was wounded when an RPG round just missed the
bow of the landing craft and exploded by the ramp. It shouldn't be hard
to remember, how often did you land on a back river in the middle of nowhere
to come to the rescue of a squad of MP's. I would like to hear from anyone
that was there that day to say thank you, especially the Captain. Please

A 2/3 just gathered in Boston at the end of July, hosted by Jim "Duke"
Deloughery and his lovely wife, Gerry (she was an incredible hostess).
Sixteen were in attendance, most with wives - we had an awesome three
days, including video of John and Naomi McBride's recent two week vacation
to Viet Nam - incredible!! John and Gary Lauzen agreed to host 2003 in
Seattle, we're counting the days and looking for guys who haven't attended.
We had a few new attendees this year who had been a little apprehensive
in the past but were speechless about reconnecting and sorry they hadn't
made the trip sooner. For those who might read this and have the same
feelings - don't pass up the opportunity - it has been the experience
of all who have attended that reconnecting with old buddies as "real people"
(as opposed to grunts) is incredibe therapy.

Former priest C. Liteky has gone to jail for trespassing on federal
property, Fort Benning, in a misbegotten effort to close the School of
the Americas. Mr. Liteky is one of the icons of the Brigade because of
his uncommon valor and being awarded the Medal of Honor. But even heros
can lose their way. He left the priesthood volunterily and I was in Washington
when he left his MOH at the wall in support of the Soviet/Cuban supported
communist government in Nicaragua and the communist insurgents in El Salvador.
His efforts would have been better understood by me if he protested the
election of a draft dodger to the White House. I wish Mr. Liteky peace
and early release. I choose to remember him for his bravery with the Redcatchers.
