I'd like to hear from anyone I knew during my tour. Anyone know where
Lt. Fred Kreppel is? Doc Frank? Myer? Puppy? Tennessee? SFC Williams?
Has anyone heard from Schultzie? Someone help me out with more names.
It's been a long time. I started as a squad leader, and was a platoon
sergeant when the colors went home. I wound up in the 11th Armored Cav.
Pretty nice life. A cool ride, two hots a day and cold sodas.

On Christmas eve 30 years ago, December 24, 1969, I was seriously wounded
while on patrol in the vicinity of Xuan Loc. Although I survived with
permament injuries, I am profoundly grateful for the 30 years of life
that I have had beyond Vietnam - 30 years that many of our friends did
not get. Although I think of this often, it is most on my mind every
Christmas Eve. I have not met a finer group of men than the men I served
with in the field in Vietnam. The men who died, although for a cause
that remains questionable, died as heroes. The most valid testimony to
that fact is the love and respect we still hold for these men and for
each other - those of us who fought in Vietnam are the best judge of this.
Truth be told, the cause we really fought for was each other. In that
regard, we definitely did an admirable job. Merry Christmas to all.

I would like to add my best wishes for the Holiday season to all Redcatchers.
I vividly remember Christmas of 1968, luckily I spent it in Sidney Australia
on R&R. One of the highlights of this year was attending the reunion
and then in June visiting Charlie Liteky. I will be at the reunion next
year, with my wife, and look forward to renewing friendships. Attending
the reunion was a great experience and helps bring closure to my Vietnam
experience. Seeing that wall with all the 199th cards made me realize
how lucky I am to be alive. Best wishes to all and I hope to see my fellow
Redcatchers in the new millenium. Thanks to Tom Ward for this web page,

Silent Night brings back the memory of 1968 Christmas season and one
of the Redcatchers attempting to record the song on tape.
As you recall,
in those days we did not have the luxury of machine to machine connectors,
so he was recording with an open mike to his reel to reel.
We came
under attack during the recording and the playback went ...Silent Night,(boom,
boom, boom), Holy night, (boom, boom, boom)...

Just checking in again. I would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas
and a Very Happy New Year. One of my favorite memories of BMB was on Christma
eve 1969 It was my second Christmas in Viet Nam. . I had 10 days left
before going home. It was late at night. There were red and green flares
in the sky and you could hear people all over the basecamp singing Silent
Night. My eyer were watering so I had to go outside to be alone. I would
have been embarassed if anyone saw me cry. I still get goose bumps today
when I think of that night. I was happy to be going home, but very sad
that I was leaving my real family [ fellow redcatchers ] for ever. After
that night the song Slient Night was never the same. Merry Christmas Redcatchers

Recently one of my platoon mates contacted the family of Osborne Mattingly
who was killed in '70 on his 21st birthday. The platoon mate and I collaborated
on a 30 minute video outlining the history of the platoon during our tour
and we dedicated it to Ozzie's memory. A copy was sent to the family
in Kentucky. They were most appreciative because they saw some photos
of Ozzie they had never seen before. The father passed away last year
and was buried next to his son. The father was a WWII vet of the Battle
of the Bulge.
I mention this because almost every message I read on
this site is seeking information on their buddies. I have read every
message too and perhaps you think I have too much time on my hands. What
have we done with our lives since we have returned? There are so many
from our Brigade that had their dreams unfulfilled. All of you have pride
in your service and the Redcatcher Brigade. You have perfectly valid
reasons for feeling that way. Some had it tougher than others, but what
counts is you all showed up to get in the grass with your buddies. Heroism
is just showing up during that war. When I shipped out to Vietnam our
president was dodging the draft and went to England. He was smart and
had the opportunity for an education, but he used his intellect to shirk
his responsibilty. Most of the men I met barely had a high school diploma
and I know of one soldier was declared not fit for combat(it was on his
201 file), but he found himself in a rifle platoon. We allowed Carter
to pardon the draft dodgers almost without a peep from the veterans.
We have elevated Cassius Clay to super hero and he refused to be drafted
and now we have elected a president that couldn't have cared less about
his fellow Americans in the grass. God bless the Redcathers.

B-4/12 and sometimes platoon leader. In 1990, 10 members of the 3d Plt
had a 20 year reunion in WashDC. One fellow came as far as South Dakota.
The following year we dedicated a tree and a bas relief in Arlington
National Cemetery to those that died while serving in the 199th LIB.
Sculptor of the bas relief was my former point man, Andrew Chernak. The
tree and plaque are located 100 meters up the path leading uphill into
the cemetery on the right side. The path is the one closest to the vistors

Hi Folks, Just wanted to give you an update on the new site. I have
been working real hard moving things to the new domain. I will have everything
moved by this weekend. I have changed the name of the site to Redcatcher
10 Alpha the callsign that I used in Vietnam. I think that the only one
that should use Redcatcher is this site so I changed mine. I tried to
put the icons large enough to read remember that a lot of us are getting
up in age and our eyesight is not what it used to be. Remember if you
want to be in the DATABASE you must either sign my guestbook or send me
an email in order to be in it. The database is coming along I get new
emails about twice a week and others sign the guestbook. Still waiting
on info on Olson Medal of Honor awardee. I have put part of it up on
the MOH page and Honor page but I need a item from the University of Minnesota
then it will be complete. Stop by and check out the new site and please
let me know that you dropped by. If I do not get back before Christmas
everyone have a Happy Holiday Season. God Bless CLAY

Good day fellow soldiers: I discovered this site a few days ago and
am enjoying it very much! It brings back a lot of memories from '70 in
the H&HCo, at BMB Long Binh. I remember Sp4 John Miranda from NYC and
Morris Austin from Tenn. When 199th was deactivated I was assigned to
25th Div. in Cu Chi for 17 days, then on to 1st Cav. at FSB Bittons, only
3 mi. from Cambodia ( I believe it was Phuoc Vinh or Binh). I R&R'ed
in Bangkok; was a beautiful city. I can still recall my flight out of
VietNam; "R2B4", on 24 Dec.'70 and it was finished. I'll stop by this
site again soon. Take Care & God Bless all of you who served.

given much thought to what happened in that chapter of my life. In fact
I pretty much closed it. One of the members of my unit "C" Co. 7th Support
lives here in San Antonio and we keep in touch. I met another member
of my old unit earlier this year. It had been over 30 years. I was a

thank Him also for those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.

WOW! What memories are envoked trough this page. I served with HHC
4/12, 199th LIB from August 9, 1968 to August 8, 1969. My assignment
was that of cook, although i rearly did any cooking. Spend majority of
time cleaning field stoves, and the old 55 gal. shower heaters. Although
my tour of duty was rather uneventful, there was one incident in January
1969 that perhaps may bring back some memories to the medics. I was back
at base camp, and was doing some minor construction on a loading dock.
A Fellow cook was with me, I believe his name is William Pold, I was
using a circular saw to cut through a sheet of plywood when the blade
came in contact with a knot in the wood, and the saw backed up right into
my thigh. Alot of memories from Firebase Stephanie and others. I can
recall some of the others I served with, SFC Herbert or Hubert, sp4 Parissi;
Sp4 Sunshine Williams; Sp5 Huff, Sp4 Williams Graves, and pfc montalvo.
You have done a great job on this web page, keep it up. I
will check in from time to time.
