Robert L. Carson <carsonrl@sce.com> from Lakewood, California
Some help, please. I served with a mobility Air Force unit, 8'th Aerial Port Squadron in 1970-1971 mainly with the larger infantry divisions (1'st Cav, 25'th, then 101'st). A friend of mine's husband died some time back from Agent Orange complications, and she would like to ressurect his unit insignia. According to his DEROS orders, he was with the 4'th Engineer Battalion, 1'st Armored Division (?), somewhere in II corps. Not my AOR, so I'm not familiar with this outfit. Any help would make this young widow very happy. Thanks!

John McBride <john.mcbride@continentalinc.com> from Seattle, Washington
http://None at this time
I was assigned to Company A, 2nd of the 3rd, 199th L.I.B. in early April, 1969. At the time I joined the 1st Platoon, Sgt. Hollis' squad, the Company was at the Binh Dinh Bridge just north of Binh Chan south of Saigon. We shortly left that location and rifted around for several weeks going to FSB Elvira, then to do a cordon near Binh Luc, and finally were taken by landing craft to FSB Barbara in the Pineapple. It was from Barbara that we were moved to FSB Blackhorse in mid-June, 1969, following, on the way, a three day stand-down at BMB in Ho Nai. I had become Cpt. Balderson's RTO by that time, having replaced a guy nicknamed, 'Peaches', who was going to a job at BMB. I remained in the CP group until the end of December, 1969 at which time I was re-assigned to Headquarters Company as an RTO joining them in January, 1970. I remained at Blackhorse until May. The Battalion CP left Blackhorse then to move to a small FSB located between rubber plantation and jungle east and south of Xuan Loc near a small village by the name of Cam Tam, if my memory serves me correctly. I remained there until I contracted dysentery later in May, was sent back to BMB and finally went home on June 7th, 1970.

Although I am in touch with many of the men with whom I served, if there are any of you who are reading this and realizing for the first time that you served with me and can contact me, please do so. I'd like to hear from any of the enlisted men, NCO's, and Officers who were with Company A, 2nd/3rd, from 04/69 through 06/70. Take care, all of you, and my best wishes go with you. John

GREAT SITE: My monthly visit to the site in search of any lost buddies who may have served with BDE HEADQUARTERS RIFLE PLATOON before and on TET or with CO.A 4/12TH INF. especially on May 30th 1968 which was my 19TH birthday when I was seriously wounded twice once in the shoulder and once in the Chest charging a VC Bunker when my unit was ambushed by a well en-trench VC force just outside of saigon, after being airlifted to a surgical hospital in Saigon I then lost all contacts with friends and unit so after 30yrs I,am on a journey trying to locate old friends and or try to find out what happen to my unit on that day and the following days THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS THE 199TH AND GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

I would like to hear from anyone that can tell me what company the repair parts division was assigned to or anyone that may have been there at the same time I was.
Thanks for the great job you do and all other Redcatcher sites. We need to remember and be remembered.

Served with Co. E 2/3 from 5/67 to 2/68 as a squad leader. Prior to that time I was with the 25th Inf. Div. at Cu Chi, Tay Nihn and the Iron Triangle Area. While in the 199th I lived in a small village called Long Duc in the Mekong Delta. The choppers would pick us up in our village for sweep and destroy missions and drop us into an AO for up to 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Ambush patrols were the norm at night. I rotated home a few days after the Tet Offensive and couldn't believe the cold reception from those who were reading all the negative press about baby killers and pathological G.I.s who were trying to fit into a world that no longer honored them. Thirty two years is a long time ago,but I will never forget the friends I made and especially those who mad the ultimate sacrifice. I have since met with three of my friends from Echo Co....one in Washington, one in Pensylvania and one from Phoenix, Arizona.
This is a great web-site.Hope to make the reunion some time.

Served in country July 67 to May 30th 68 which was my 19th birthday when I was seriously wounded, just outside of Saigon in a ambush which turned into a major firefight, and after which I completely lost contact and communications with my unit and friends never to know the outcome of that day and following days so now after thirty years I'am looking for old buddies or anyone that can help me in my search. A gentleman name by Harvey Harrison has been trying to help me out which I'am very thankful, but any other help would be very welcome, I served with both the Bde. Headquarters Rifle Platoon and CO.A 4/12Th.Once again a big thankyou Harvey Harrison and my best wishes to all my Fellow REDCATCHERS.

Hi again. Hope you all had a great Fourth. Anybody have a time line from Chris to Libby? I started my tour
at Chris and finished at Libby with Bien Dinh bridge, Fishnet, and Jeanie some where in between but can't
remember the order or approximate dates. Had a "memories" phone conversation with Bruce Angstadt this week.
He was with the B/5/12 platoon that was ambushed and six Redcatchers including Sgt. Cox were killed by an RPG
shortly after the move to Libby. If you remember Bruce and want to drop him a line he's at d.angstadt@gte.net.
If you visit my website and have any problems with the yearbook or picture albumn pages let me know as I've
been having permission problems with some of the files since the server upgrade.

Last reunion was great. Ran across some old comrades from 30 years ago. As General Bond's aide, I knew and associated with several personnel during that assignment. It was extremely gratifying to have both of Gen Bond's piolts, Jim and Wes, as well as his enlisted aide, Sgt Teacoat, at the reunion. All three of us had some great stories about our Redcatcher 6. Additionally, I was proud to have several members of my platoon in attendance. Roland Merson, our company commander, Sam "Doc' Rankin, Alan "Moose" Copeland, Tony "Tennessee" White, Tom Bloom, Ty Becker, John Heilner, and Dennis Koski. And of course, we cannot forget Father Phil, a member of 2/A/3/7. Sorry

John F. McBride <john.mcbride@continentalinc.com> from Seattle, Washington
I began my tour on April 7th, 1969, serving initially as a squad RTO with Sgt. Hollis in the 1st Platoon, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry. I was then the RTO for our platoon leader, 1st Lt. Fisher, and then the company RTO for Captain Balderson, Captain Hartley, and finally Captain Frye. At the end of December, 1969 I was denied permission to return to the field after a R & R and was assigned to the Battalion TOC with several other RTO's where we monitored the radios twenty four hours a day and kept the battalions logs as well as requesting air support, resupply, medivacs, and armor. In May of 1970 I contracted an intestinal illness and was sent to Brigade Main Base in Honai where I remained until I went home on June 7th. If any of you know where Balderson is, I would like to talk to him. But I would much more like to locate Clarence Barnett, Dave Sanders, Sergeant Rodriquez, Hollis, Fisher, Captain Atkins, Sergeant Stone, Sergeant Fuller, Sergeant Fowler, 'Tank' Tarnowski, and others. Feel free to call me.

For those of you who remember Charlie (Formerly Father Angelo) Liteky, I just got back from visiting him for a couple of days. He is doing well, is in good health and doing what he feels he has been called to do. I looked for him for years as he helped me through some difficult times 30 years ago and I wanted to see him again. He is still the same man he was then, with the same spirit and sense of justice and concern for his fellow man. We played poker as we did 30 years ago and this time he let me beat him. I know many of you knew him and still care about him and that is why I am posting this on the web page. If all goes well, and he is able, he assured me he would attend the next reunion.

Dave Parks here and asking for any help any of you may be able to give in my search for the name of a fellow 199'er. Below is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Clay Crowder this AM, it should explain the details:

Hi. I checked out the new page and it is looking good. I'm glad I did too because I am trying to find the name of one of our KIA. Your scans of the Year Books helped but I need more info. I am planning a trip to the Wall next year and want to "say hello" to this fellow. Details:

It was during the May 5th offensive when the Brigade was west and south of Saigon. I was on a firebase and this kid was brought in along with two VC, all were wounded. The medic, a Staff Sargent, worked on him franticly, I helped him briefly (I just happened to be there when the kid came in), but the trooper died. He was very young, had blond hair and was maybe fairly new in country. I am fairly sure he was 11B.

My problem: I don't have a clue what FB I was on or what unit it was (battalion sized base, had tracked 155's and 105's along with mortars, It was near a fairly large village. On the road in we passed some large antenna's. I remember that when we convoyed through the vil the adults looked grim and would not let their children interact or beg from us, they just stood in their doorways and stared at us, holding their children back. There was plenty of fights around that base, and one in or near that vil. Also, some Charlie with a .50 cal sniped at us for several days until a tank dozer buried him and pushed a berm up between us and him and the vil.

Other things I remember: There was an incident of 22 charlie's marching in line toward the base, like they were on parade, and a 90mm was fired at them, knocking down 18 of them with the first shot. It must have been near the rainy season because when we built the base it was fairly dry, by the time we left there was knee deep mud in some places. I remember being wet most of the time toward the end of our stay there.

I was very effected by the kids death for some reason and have always wanted to know his name and where he was from. If you could point me toward any brigade data bases or information that might aid me in determining what unit manned that fire base, what province we were in, anything! I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance.

Hi Guys!!! Just wanted to tell everyone what a fantastic time I had in DC... Can't stop thinking about the great conversations, the laughter, and the healing hugs... especially the hugs!!! Pete, Top, Gary, Tom, et al... you did an incredible job getting us all together and setting up a whole bunch of new treasured memories. Next year, I promise to have inserts for the programs with the words to "Auld Lang Syne"... >> I was just looking at an article that spoke of "warmth, humor, and acceptance" as being the cornerstones of a lasting relationship... I firmly believe that we celebrate all of those qualities in the 199th. Lots of TLC and many hugs, Kammy

My brother Tom's name was read Sunday at the ceremony. (I was the ugly guy with the cap). I was a little late (should have realized that 250,000 cyclists in town for Rolling Thunder might have an impact on traffic), but it was very impressive and well-done. For the family members who weren't there, the Redcatcher Association not only read the names but placed individual name cards bearing the brigade colors and logo at the base of each panel on the Wall where your soldier's name appears -- this was a neat and very thoughtful gesture, I saw it as a kind of connection of the living with the dead, but eternally alive. Many thanks to all who sponsored and participated in the ceremony; it was much appreciated. Again, I would recommend that anyone looking for information on a family member or friend who served in the 199th post an inquiry on this website; I did last year and the response was tremendous.

Found this site and thought I would say hi. My nicknames were Azrael or $#&%head depending on who was talking to me. I was a day one advance party member in 66, and was in HQ & 1st platoon of A 4/12. Years ago I wrote a poem about the "Wall" that the best soldier I ever knew(SGTM. James A. Diamond)used to end a film he made of the 199th. If you didn't get the film, but would like to see the poem, let me know and I will post a copy. HELP???? I need to get a legal question answered by a law officer from the N Y area, preferably Brooklyn. Please let me know if there are any 199th relics out there who might be able to help. It isn't anything serious, just a question about a legal point. Thanks and good luck in your lives.

Designing one for the Vietnam trip I am organizing
Fellow Redcatchers: There are not words to express the feelings I have as a result of this first reunion I attended. I can not describe what a great time I had with brothers (and sisters) in arms in that terrible war that took so many young lives. What a healing to attend one of these events and share memories both good and bad. I haven't met as many folks that I feel such closeness to in my whole life. I have been lucky to have run with some pretty big dogs in my life and 32 years associated with the military but none am I so proud of as the Redcathers and there wives, significant others and families. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of family members who also attended. I especially treasure the time I was able to spend with General Forbes. He is a great guy and loves the Redcatchers. Unfortunately I waited to long and didn’t get to shake General Davidson’s hands but I did attend the service at his gravesite. I was also honored to be the Brigade color bearer for the reading of the names of our KIA. I videoed several events and hope to have Tom add them to the web page for those of you unable to attend. My special thanks to Peter, Top, Tom and all the others who organize these events and the web page without which many of us would have never known about the association. I also thank all the attendees to allow me to be me without judging me, as I have more than a few screws loose! I am already making plans to attend next year with my spouse and hopefully my son. I am proud to be a Redcatcher and have been welcomed home.

I am starting my research in organizing a trip back to our AO, probably just before or after the next reunion. Details to follow and I will create a web page and ask Tom if he wouldn’t mind linking to it.
