Jeff Baldwin <jbaldwin@conc.tds.net>
from I am in Knoxville, TN now
I flew out of Fort Benning, GA and arrived in Long Binh on Dec. 24th,
1966. I was the point for the 1st squad, 1st platoon and spent most of
my time around the "Old French Fort" in the Delta. I would like to thank
all of the members of the 1st and 2nd squadw of the 1st platoon and the
rest of my comrades in Company C of the 3rd/7th for helping save my life
32 years ago on May 1st, 1967. When I finally made it to the triage unit
of the 3rd Field Hospital one of the doctors called for the chaplin -
it was that close. A special note to Bizell and Senzatimore whom I took
down with me - I am truly sorry. I hope your injuries weren't severe.
The
199th - none finer Thanks again to Bizell, Senzatimore, Talkington, Zizzamia,
Hardin, Logan, Bush, Renz,Jackson, Schmidty, Capt. Wood, Sgt Malone, and
all of the others - the names of whom I cannot remember.

memory is getting
bad. If you served with A company, do you remember
the
First SGT losing the Beer money on a "search and avoid" and 5
of us got volunteered to go back to the last break spot and find it, in
the dark. Only to have him find it in his other pocket when we got back!
I'm still waiting for the case of beer.
To all of you who for whatever
reason put your life on the line for your country. Thank you. It ain't
much, just a thanks. Some Vets are still waiting for someone to say
just

thru Feb 1968. I am trying to get information on the death of Paul Sonstein
who kia 2/21/68.
The only name that her sister could come up with
was Alan.
I am a vet, 523rd Eng Co (PC), 34th Eng Gp, 20 Eng Bge 7/69
thru
7/70. Pauls sister ask me to help her find information on her brother's
death. (Her son is a Boy Scout in my Troop). She received a telegram
in 68 saying on thing and not too long ago received a letter saying something
else. She has never believed the ist telegram. Paul was born 3/26/46
in San Mateo, CA., Went to hs in Pleasent Hill, CA. He was U.S. drafted,
believed to ship out to the Nam from Ft. Lewis, WA. I think he was a
SP/4.
Unfortunately I do not have any other information that would
help find anyone who served with Paul. Any information would greatly
be appreciated. Thanks for your time, thanks for being there and making
it easier for me when I went over. Rich

from Floresville, Texas
http://www.stic.net/users/rfromme/
SSGT Charles Manuel Andujar of the 199 th Light Infantry Brigade who
listed his home as Newark, New Jersey was killed on June 13, 1969.
I
was also hit in the same firefight that killed SSGT Andujar. He was the
Sgt. from another Platoon in Delta company but our unit had been short
of men and on that day (we were down to 14) so they took a few men from
several platoons of our company to create a reconnaissance squad. Sgt.
Andujar was placed in charge of the mixed recon squad which went out
ahead of the company. Soon after the firefight began, I was forced to
go down the trail to help them out, I carried an M60 at that time, and
I could hear the men calling for a "60". The fellow with an M60 ahead
of me had a gun that needed parts and so I was next in line up the trail.
When I got the bottom of the trail, the fire fight was still on. I found
Sgt. Andujar's body on the trail (he had caught 3 AK47 rounds across
his chest). The rest of the squad members were still alive, trying to
return fire. The SGT had been the highest ranking man in that squad and
the N.V.A would try to take out the one with the most rank first, if they
could see the black stripes. They were very close, in bunkers on the ridge
above. The Sgt. caught rounds at the outset. Our fire fight lasted several
hours. They were lobbing a few grenades around us and at least one even
sailed over us and exploded up the trail behind us. To make matters worse,
our unit had a couple of crazies with 79s planted at the top of the hill
behind us trying to give us support. Their rounds would hit the triple
canopy and explode in the trees behind and above us. Our unit up the
trail tried to call for artillery and they walked two rounds in toward
us from the right and a third came in over us, hitting to the left of
us on its way past.. When we yelled for them to call and stop the big
guns, The Captain called in a Cobra which also came in behind us and
chopped up the jungle between us and our unit. It just about did us
in with its second run at us but we popped smoke between us and Charlie's
bunkers and the pilot cut the gun just in time and flew on over us.
When it was over, the medic discovered that I had been hit
by part of a grenade from the bunkers above us. So Sgt. Andujar's body
was strapped to a stiff litter and hoisted up out of the triple canopy
through an opening created by a bomb (or several artillery shells).
We had placed him in a body bag but realized that the closest LZ was
about three Clicks through the jungle and none of the troops wanted to
drag the body to a place where the resupply chopper could come in and
pick it up. The Sgt. was taken out of the bag and strapped to a stiff
litter and then hoisted up through a small opening in the trees ( it was
a crator from a bomb or several artillery shells). I was the next to
ride the hoist up to the "Dustoff" chopper. I will never forget that
trip up, fighting branches, swinging around and watching my buddies turning
into ants at the jungle floor. I road in the Med-Evac chopper with the
body of the Sgt. at my feet. A couple times the chopper banked and he
started sliding. We would catch him and the litter and drag him back
to the center of the bird. The last I remember of the Stg. was the sight
of the medics offloading him as I was helped in to the operating area
of the hospital tent at the base camp (Bearcat I think....perhaps it was
named Black horse, after thirty years my memory fails me here. )
Last
Sunday, my H.S. aged daughter was asked with the other band members at
her school to attend and play at the ceremony at for the traveling wall
which had come to the local Floresville (Texas), City Park for the week.
My wife and I went over to support her at the event and I was not prepared
for the experience of the wall. (even if it was only half sized and transient)
For thirty years I have tried to avoid most of the memories from Vietnam
and now I guess it was about time that I came to terms with a few things.
Most of the names I could remember were of fellows who were not killed
but were only wounded. A few names of the dead did come to mind. I remembered
the name of Sgt. Andujar of Newark, New Jersey but discovered that I
needed to do a computer search to find where he was amongst the thousands
of men on the wall. This past week, I have been thinking a great deal
about those years and the men in the 199th. I am thinking of trying to
contact Sgt. Andujar's surviving family members in case they are interested
in some of the details of his death. Also, If any of you from my unit
recognize my name from thirty years past and want to talk, feel free
to send me a note.
want to contact me
I did not know the
man well since I was only a PFC. He was not assigned to my Platoon,
however,
he was known to be a quiet, fair man who tried to take care of his men.
I had
been told by some of the troops under him that they thought
well of him.

I was Fireball 15 from April 70 until stand-down, then went to B/3/17
"Stogies". No one was as good as the "Redcatchers"!! My cousin, Dennis
Jackson, was killed in 1966 with the "Redcatchers", and my family didn't
tell me he was at 199th until I got back to the USA. Any of you guys know
him?? Also, I was one of the Fireball pilots to get to FSB Gwen after
it got hit 8/9/70,and I've got nothing but respect for you guys. Turned
out a kid I grew with, Jerry Dyer, was on the ground in another action
as we hovered around poppin' smoke on sappers bodies.

PATRICK DOUGHERTY <pat1@ClaimsMaster.com>
from San Diego Ca.
Went to Macv recon (LRRP)school in Na trang in April 1967. Joined
The
first LRRP unit in Cat Lie by the old french fort. Sgt.
Olson in charge.
We did recon for D Troup 17 Cav. in the
delta. First to wear the
tigar uniforms. Had to pay for them
out of pocket. We traded the seals
for ponchos and weapons.
I believe this later became the 75 ranger
unit. Not sure
as I spent second tour up north. While hitch hicking
down
south I visited the 199th base, but by then it look like a
small
city. Anyone out there remember. Small, two, three, four
seven man
patrols. When I arrived a Cat Lie LRRPS were just being
organized.
We got a new Lt. His dad was a Gereral. He went
on a few missions
with us. Cant remember the names. A short
guy from florida, bare
foot guy from tenn. O'conner Irish.
Twin brothers from??? Spent the
night on a water tower. Lots
of water recon. Its a long time ago...Did
some ambush patrols
with the 17 cav. Lots of fighting over the Ak47s
recovered.
Headquarters sent helo out in night to pick up the weapons.
Headquarters wanted souviners.
German guy. His dad served in SS unit
during the big II.
He brought a monkey with him. That monkey could
really
drink. Some Sgt.Mjr.in D troup did him in. Hated that monkey.
Wish
I had the names but I don't. Drop a line if you were there.

Bibb Underwood <bibb-janet@rattlers.net>
from San Marcos, Texas
Read the review of Stolen Valor in the San Antonio Express-News yesterday
and discovered it was co-written by B.G. Burkett. He served in the Nam
with 7th S&P Bn. I would like to know when he was there and if he served
with LTC, later, BG Stubbs. That would have been 1970. His book is available
for $23.95 from Amazon.com if you are interested. I was the CO of the
3/7th from February 1970 to mid July 1970.

Thanks to the efforts of Andy Krasnican, one of my former company commmanders,
I have already communicated with five of my old company comrades. It is
a fitting homecoming for me and many others. Served in the 3/7, E Co.,
recon, and then went to 2/3 where I was wounded.
