Transferred in-country to the 179th MID from the 11th Armored Cav Regt,
541st MID, about March 1967. Replaced Neal Sawyer at Binh Chanh, who
went to the 11th Cav. Had been in touch with him for several years, until
he passed away from a heart attack about six months ago. He had been
active in searching for Missing In Action persons.

Bat. I was with (selective amnesia
I guess), but I do know I was
with an infantry unit in the Xuan Loc area. I'm stepping out on a limb

asking anyone out there if they know what units were in that area
at that time.
P.S. I spent another tour with the 25th from 9/69 to
9/70.

with SFC Corpus, 1Lt. Birkhead and Cpt. Lee was the Company C.O. From
BMB at Bien Hoa we deployed to FSB Libby and then forward to FSB Gladys
on the Song Dong Nai, across from the Old French Fort. I would like to
hear from any comrades that served with me or who served with the Redcatchers

Hey, guys, is there anyone out there who was in Alpha Battery, 2/40
Artillery that deployed with the Brigade? We were at the Caltex Facility
just above Nha Be. Also, is there anyone that was at the French Fort
on the river below Saigon in 67 when we occupied it? Lastly, anyone that
was in the 6th gun section of A/2/40. I believe that those of us who
deployed with the Brigade are called the "Originals".The last person that
I talked to was SFC Charlie Cain and that was in Korea in 1971. Remember
him?

I was in country from Oct. '68 to feb. '69 before being dusted off and
later sent to Camp Zama in Japan. I was in B company but have lost the
rest of my information due to some vandalism. Looking for Lt. Hopper
who was riddled with frag in front of me, and Hickey who's face swelled
up like a baloon from some bug bite minutes before a napalm drop near
us, and Dan Laurenitus who sat at my bedside crying and sang beautifully,
and Sgt. Bostwick who yelled "mortars" and probably saved more lives than
he realizes.

Thanks for a job well done! I served with 2/40 arty. from June 69 until
Aug. 70 as a arty. surveyor - spent time at most all of the fire support
bases Nancy, Crystal, Libby etc... Was Gen. Bond's enlisted aide for the
month of March 1970 (Good guy. cared about his troops) Went back to my
unit the day before he got killed. When the Lt. told me he had been killed
I thought it was a joke because it was April 1.. (April fools day). Anyone
remember the NVA bunker complex under fsb Crystal? I'd appreciate any
info on Tom Lapke (Montana) or Tom Smith (Smitty) (Kansas) both went to
the aviation unit before I left. I've seen Buster Newton "Newt" (Fla.
now Ohio) and "Dewey" Davenport (Va.). Won't be able to get to the
reunion in Ga. maybe next time>> Drop me a note if any of this rings
a bell...

30 years later, and a slow day on the inter-net, then, WOW,I found the
Red Catchers. I was part of the 199th from almost the first. At Ft.
Jackson, I dedcided I really didn't want to go to OCS. Shortly I was
on my way to Ft. Benning, then to Mississippi, to"acclimate" for SE Asia.
Checking in, as a college grad and with the ability to type, I was made
into a clerk, instead of an infantryman. Anyone remember?

I was with the 575tc at cp.jones frist week in country a short timer
from 199 go it from a 122 mm rocket directly behing my houch toung luck
or no luck.
My job was to support A Troop 3/17 air craft. Ran into
many people from a lot of detachments when units stood down at base camp.
many routy nights were spent at the em club.
I was always amased how
the ch57 and ch47 helicopters would lift the many supplys needed for a
firebase and equiptment deployment. The memories are great and not all
are joyful for many of my comrads did not return

Many thanks for a very fine website and the service you provide to,
among others, family members of the soldiers who served in the 199th.
Last summer, I was visiting Antietam Battlefield and at its museum read
a number of the post-battle accounts of the men who fought there. It struck
me that I hadn't done a writeup on my own brother, SP4 Thomas Grover,
who was with the 199th and was lost at Cu Chi on February 2, 1969. (I
believe this type of report, whether it is written by the soldier himself
or a relative or friend, is important for future generations so that they
can read an account of their family members who served). I sent an email
note to you which was posted on the website and was gratified at the number
of responses I received almost immediately by phone and email -- it was
a tremendous help in finding out information I never would have learned
but needed to. If a relative or friend is looking for information on
anyone who served in the 199th, I strongly recommend that they consider
posting a note on this site. Many thanks again for creating and maintaining
the site and our particular appreciation to the 199th alumni who responded
to our request for information.

199th Light Infantry Brigade. During the 1968 Tet offensive in the battel
of Saigon. Our company commander was Cpt. Antonio (Tony) Smaldone. We

I ddi not see any reference to activation of the 199th Bde at Fort Lewis
in early 1991. The 199th Bde (Motorized) was established from the remainder
of the 9th ID and was later inactivated in July 1992 to make room for
the 2nd ACR (Light).

It was 30 years ago last month that I reported to C Co 4/12 as an FO
later I was with B 4/12Inf. I was actually assigned to C 2/40. Great
Page, I would go to the reunion in May if I knew some of the guys I served
