Liked your site!My fondest memories of my 13+ years in uniform have
to be of my time spent with the 172nd LIB (Sep.) up in Alaska during 85&86.I'm
obviously too young for Nam, but have a great deal of respect for light
fighters that fought there.I have only been to jungle school in Panama,
but I bet Vietnam was something most of you will never forget.I have also
been in the 6th LID in Alaska in 86/87.During my 4 years of college I
was with the 47th & 34th Inf. Divisions Minnesota Guard.As a LT. I was
at Bragg w/ 1-39 FAR (ABN) & 3-319 AFAR.Since Oct. 96 I have been a member
of the BIG RED ONE in Germany.I am currently attached to 1AD in Bosnia.Hope
to get out of here & back to Germany/the States for leave around May.Hope
to hear back from anyone willing to drop me a few lines.Thank you all
for your service in Vietnam.AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!

I was a Platoon Leader in companies B and C 2nd/3rd from late '66 to
the end of '67. Recently participated in the Vietnam Challenge, a 1200
mile bicycle ride from Hanoi to Saigon with other disabled and able bodied
vets including some from North and South Vietnam
Vietnam. During
Vietnam Challenge, I returned to Nhon Duc 4, where our unit was stationed
for 6 months. I t was "built up" - paved road, eletricity, telephones
and 6 or 7 small stores but still quite primative in many ways. I spent
half a day there visiting the school,
the community house and saw
several of rhe elder village officials. I was surprised that the young
children I had photographed 30 years ago were not there and were not recognized
by any of the current villagers. Sports Illustrated TV is doing a documentary
of our trip
which will be aired during the NBA Playoffs on Memorial
Day Weekend.

I was with Co B 7thSpt BN - April 68 to April 69. I retired from the
Army in 1991 after 27 years. I have Multiple Meyloma cancer caused by
Agent Orange from VN. Everyone in 199th was exposed to Agent Orange and
shoiuld have Agent Orange Screening Test by VA. Your are authorized
care at VA hospitals and should get VA card the same day you have screening
test. If you have one of the 40 plus cancers attributable to Agent Orange
you should get 100% disability of over $#1920/month. You need to do this
for your family ( wife and children). Contact me if you have questions
or want to talk about applying for VA pension.

Assigned to 2/40 FA October 68 to October 69 (366 days, got bumped for
a Red Cross emergency leave). When I checked in from 90th Repple Depple,
1st Sgt gave out the assignments. All the other FNGs were assigned to
gun sections. When the 1st Sgt got to me he said, "Delta Co." I knew there
weren't any companies in the artillery, so I spent most of the year as
a FO/recon sergeant with C and D 4/12 at FSB Pineapple, Binh Dinh Bridge,
FSB Joy, and Xuan Loc among other scenic places. Really great to find
this site, it's so rare to meet anyone who served in the 199th LIB.

I casn sympathize with the comments about never meeting another
member
of the 199th. I was in the USAR for six years, Baton Rouge-
Mesquite,TX-Ft.
Belvoir as an instructor at the Bridging Branch. I met
only one other
Redcatcher in all that time. Few GIs could
even identify my patch,
thought it was some kind of USAR or

AMBUSH ALLEY
A burnt out ACAV ( Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle
) and duce and half rested along the side of the road from Long Binh to
War Zone D in the morning rain. I noticed the white letters on the side
of the ACAV: LUCKY. As the wipers throb, and scrape, I think to myself
that I should have stayed home and finished high school. I felt a little
guilty, shifted gears, and accelerated, weaving through and past the other
drivers on my way to fire support base Nancy outside Dinh Quan. As long
as there is traffic on this road there is safety in numbers.
Racing
through the villages in the rain, you try to avoid people, animals, and
little children. There are no red lights. Everywhere radios blasting
some Vietnamese love song sung by a Vietnamese woman. Probably singing
about lost love, it sounds sad, but soothing. That same song drifting
from every window, house, and shop. Many of the people listening. For
Americans, it was always the background ambience that filled in the
big picture. A few people stop what they are doing and look at you as
you drive through their village. That look with a question. I glance
back and think I'm the lucky one. Some purposely don't look at you. They're
just moving props, going back to their daily routines.
The
rains try desperately to clean the village of that unfamiliar smell, but
to no avail. It's a dirty place and a dirty war. The cleansing will take
a long time. As I leave the village I think about that poor guy in the
lucky truck and wonder if he lived. I feel a little guilty as I steer
out of the village back onto the long, straight, and empty road lined
with jungle on both sides. I reach over, flick off the safety on the M-16
in the passenger seat, shift gears, press the peddle to the floor, and
accelerate. I think to myself, today, will I be LUCKY.

Formerly SP5 E-5 with HHQs 199th, June 1966 to November 1966. Brought
back from 19 months in Germany and spent Summer '66 at Fort Benning (Sand
Hill, I believe) helping form the unit. Went to Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg,
Mississippi, for the six weeks of jungle training in September 1966.
Trained for casualty reporting with HHQs. Reassigned to HHQs, US Army
Infantry Center, Fort Benning, in November 1966. Last HHQs 199th assignment
was loading the rail flat cars and the sea containers for the unit's trip
to Vietnam. Have never forgotten my experience with the 199th, no matter
how brief. Was pleased a few years ago when I found that Time-Life had
covered the "RedCatchers" in one of their volumes on Vietnam. Really
enjoyed the site and will return. Welcome home!

Served three tours in Nam and Cambodia (2/1970 - 3/1972) with D Bty/25th
Arty later the 277th Field Arty and the 264th Field Arty at FSB Happy
in Cambodia. Most of this time lived in a compound in a small ville in
the same area as 199th in the "pineapple plantation" area near Duc Hoa.
Have had the good fortune to have been able to return to Nam
three times since 1989. The first trip back was certainly an experience
that I will never forget. It hurts to say it, but I got a better welcome
from the Vietnamese when I returned in Feb. 1989 than I ever got from
my countrymen when I came home in 1972.

We were just talking today about meeting World War II veterans
during the Viet Nam War and how old they seemed. Sad to say: the number
of years since Viet Nam is greater than the number of years from WW II
to Viet Nam. That really makes me feel old.
On a brighter note:
Hope to be at Benning in 98. Go Redcatchers ! ! !
